Communicare Inc is Hiring a Youth Peer Support Specialist Near Oxford, MS

Communicare is a community mental health center in North Central Mississippi that serves Calhoun, Lafayette, Marshall, Panola, Tate and Yalobusha counties. Communicare offers specialized treatment services for adults with serious mental illness, children with serious emotional disturbances, individuals with substance abuse disorders and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Communicare is currently seeking a Youth Peer Support Specialist.

Peer Support-
Provides a variety of recovery-oriented services to individuals who desired peer supports, in order to improve independence, community integration, and recovery from mental illness and or substance abuse. Services provided by peers (consumers or family members) include a wide range of supports, services, and advocacy that contribute to a client’s ability to engage in ongoing treatment and attain their individualized goals for recovery.
Functions:
The Peer Support Specialist (System of Care) is charged with providing supports and services from the perspective of lived experience to children, youth, and their families. The Peer Support Specialist shall teach and model the value of every individual’s recovery experience; model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies; encourage peers to develop independent behavior that is based on choice rather than compliance; and establish and maintain a peer relationship rather than a hierarchical relationship. 
Qualifications:
  1. Current DMH Peer Support Specialist certification or ability to obtain.
  2. Demonstrate a minimum of 6 months in self-directed recovery. 
  3. Current or former consumer or first degree family member of an individual who has received treatment for and self-identifies as a consumer or former mental health consumer. 
  4. Completion of required training in compliance with DMH standards.
  5. Satisfactory completion of CPR prior to reporting to the work site. 
  6. Satisfactory completion of CPI within 30 days of employment.
  7. Valid driver’s license and current auto-liability insurance.
  8. Previous experience in a mental health setting is strongly preferred.
  9. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to evaluate youth/staff needs preferred.
  10. Fine motor skills for legible and accurate writing of reports, scheduling, daily correspondence and presentations preferred.
  11. Efficient use of time management by keeping thoughts free of obstruction preferred.
  12. Strong time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  13. Must have a working understanding of Microsoft programs and applications such as excel, word, and outlook.
  14. Must be comfortable speaking and presenting in small groups.
Job Duties:
  1. Assist youth in determining and articulating objectives to reach personal goals for recovery.
  2. Determine and utilize specific interventions based on individual’s recovery/life goals.
  3. Respond to consumers’ needs in an appropriate and timely manner.
  4. Assist youth in creating a Wellness Recovery Action Plan.
  5. Provide one-on-one and family support, as well as, group meetings as indicated to develop problem solving techniques, social skill building, and identification of natural/community support systems. 
  6. Provide support and assistance to youth by telephone and face-to-face prior to their enrollment in the SOC program.
  7. Assist youth in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy and support. 
  8. Maintain client confidentiality at all times. 
  9. Provide information, referral and emotional support to youth enrolled in the SOC services.
  10. Familiarize self with all aspects of System of Care (SOC) values, needs, and services, Wraparound Teams, Strengths-Based Planning, and Evaluation and incorporate into service provision. 
  11. Accompany youth to meetings in order to support program participation.
  12. Conduct home visits for regular monitoring.
