Job Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of HR Strategic Communications, the Assistant Director of Digital Content manages and leads digital projects to drive faculty and staff engagement and is responsible for the management, maintenance, and ongoing development of a suite of Columbia University Human Resources (CUHR) websites—including content, graphics, user experience, SEO, information architecture and accessibility. CUHR employs over 100 staff members and serves a University community of over 20,000 full and part-time faculty and staff.

As a member of the CUHR communications team, the Assistant Director will participate in the day-to-day operations of the department's web, outreach, and communication efforts to internal and external audiences, consistent with the department's brand messaging. The Assistant Director is responsible for implementing visual concepts and communication strategies coherently to enhance our outreach and elevate the user experience (UX).


Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day maintenance of the CUHR website, ensure timely updates, and recommend and deploy content improvements, new platforms, and other digital content.
  • Assist in implementing best practices in search engine optimization (SEO) and website usability, developing and publishing digital content.
  • Provide oversight and recommend best practices for user experience, usability, SEO, WCAG accessibility, and digital analytics.
  • Provide technical consultations, liaise with our partners in Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) and supervise technical builds, proactively analyze technical needs and respond to error reports, and prepare technical requirements for CUIT.
  • Manage all digital projects from conception to implementation.
  • Lead requirements discussions with vendors and operations stakeholders to develop new digital capabilities and shape enhancements.
  • Formulate and implement usability testing for new HR systems and other digital content projects, including applicant tracking and performance management systems.
  • Directly and regularly collaborate and counsel a diverse set of internal clients as you work together to develop and shape a digital strategy that aligns with organizational priorities.
  • Uphold standards for consistent, clear, and high-quality site content. Conduct regular quality assurance reviews to assess user experience and clear information architecture to ensure site optimization.
  • Produce original graphics and creative designs on demand for web and email, including heavy image sourcing and Photoshop work.
  • Monitor all web platforms and promptly troubleshoot any problems with site content or performance, directly or by working with our partners in CUIT.
  • Assist with the system administration and rollout of HR-related digital platforms (e.g., enterprise learning management, talent acquisition system, etc.).
  • Build relationships with content owners and website administrators across the Human Resources department and the University. In coordination with the Director, meet with staff to discuss website content needs.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned and perform other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, training, and experience, plus a minimum of five years of related experience. 

Other Requirements

  • Proficiency in Drupal 8 CMS, JavaScript, HTML, and Adobe Creative Suite, visual design, and UX.
  • Demonstrated digital manipulation of images and video skills, including resizing, compressing, converting, and rendering various media into standard digital formats.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including storytelling, voice, and tone.
  • Excellent organizational skills with an aptitude for managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, independently and in a team setting.
  • Proven ability to organize a high volume of complex content and apply design principles to connect users to information with ease and enjoyment.
  • Expertise with Google Analytics; ability to review data and identify trends.
  • Collaborative personality, customer-focused attitude, a commitment to exceptional quality, and ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to learn quickly and be flexible when working in the digital space, yet set priorities and exercise excellent judgment.
  • Adaptability and resourcefulness with existing technologies and enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
