Columbia Gorge Community College is Hiring a Career Advisor Near The Dalles, OR

Description

Provides coordination and support to the Workforce Development Department by working as lead Career Advisor on The Dalles campus. Assist students with resume and cover letter writing, job search, and career exploration. Enroll students into appropriate work-related programs upon graduation so they may gain living-wage, long-term employment in their desired field. This position is co-housed out of the WorkSource Oregon office in The Dalles providing direct services to community members under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and is required to spend half of their week at the local Oregon Employment Department (OED) office. This position is contingent on continued Title 1B Adult and Dislocated Worker funding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Fulfills open office hours for students to access work readiness resources.
  • Assists OED customers in completing WorkSource Oregon (WSO) registration and helping them understand available services.
  • Assists students and customers in identifying barriers and developing plans for overcoming them.
  • Instructs workshops in resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, computer skills, career exploration, networking/social media, and soft skills as well as offer this individually when requested.
  • Identifies customers' skill gaps and training needs and determines appropriate action.
  • Enrolls students and customers into eligible work ready training programs, monitoring their persistence and completion by making frequent contact and developing rapport.
  • Maintains accurate, thorough customer records while following compliance for a full year after participant exit from their program.
  • Proctors National Career Readiness Certificate testing.
  • Coordinates with and provides referrals to other WSO partners and community resources.
  • Communicates with employers and partners to promote WIOA services. This includes coordinating with local businesses and industries to match students/customers with an on-the-job training or short-term internship.
  • Attends training, professional development programs, and conferences as needed and necessary to successfully complete their work and tasks.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in counseling, education, or related field and one year of experience working directly with clients in disadvantaged setting; or High School graduation or equivalency and three years of experience working directly with clients in a disadvantaged setting; or satisfactory equivalent experience and training as determined by the hiring authority.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possesses excellent communication skills (writing, spelling, listening, and speaking).
  • Cooperates as a team member.
  • Possesses problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • Follows through to completion of assigned tasks.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and database software.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and good judgment in matters of college policy and procedures.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of counseling, instructional, and guidance techniques and methods; teaching and motivational techniques; classroom management. Reasonable knowledge of sales and marketing methods and techniques; Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act regulations; community services and resources; job search methods; labor market information; record keeping methods and practices.

Ability to plan, develop, and implement training programs; understand, interpret and apply statistical and assessment data and testing; establish and maintain an effective working relationship with peers, supervisors, employers, community resources, and clients; provide a supportive, motivational environment for adult customers from varying backgrounds and environments; understand and execute both oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing; apply appropriate problem solving and motivational approaches in dealing with customer problems; apply sales and marketing techniques in communicating with employers and instructing customers; prepare and present informational programs; maintain accurate, thorough records; plan and organize workload and work effectively and independent of direct supervision within established timeframes and schedules; comprehend and interpret pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines; create a positive, non-judgmental, and motivational atmosphere for customers and co-workers.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and subject to electronic influences. Work will take place within classroom and/or office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Travel: 

Periodic travel for business outreach events, conferences, and to the college campuses in both The Dalles and Hood River. Will be required to commute to The Dalles WorkSource office at least 2-3 days a week.

While performing the duties of this job, the Advisor is frequently required to sit, talk, see, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, standard keyboards of office equipment or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, night vision, and the ability to focus from near to far or far to near objects.

Other:

Have possession of or the ability to obtain a valid, unrestricted Oregon driver’s license is required.

Training will be provided in this position to learn about Oregon Employment Department best practices, how to operate specialized software and case management tools, workforce trends in our region, motivational interviewing, strength-based skills, leading with trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, and disabilities compliance, among many other offerings to ensure the person in this role feels confident and able to perform their duties to the best of their abilities.
