Role Summary 

The Facilities Director is a member of the COBS Operations Team and reports to the Director of Programs and Safety. The Facilities Director is responsible managing facilities needs at COBS’s two basecamp facilities (Leadville, Colorado and Moab, Utah), ensuring safe facility operations at both locations, schedule and budgets for ongoing maintenance and repair, and support for new construction and capital projects. The Facilities Director also serves as the point person for managing our inactive basecamp in Marble, CO 

This is an administrative (50%) and hands-on (50%) position, and requires experience with people and project management, as well as understanding of construction, repair, and maintenance. The primary work location is flexible but requires frequent travel to COBS’s basecamp facilities in Leadville, Marble, and Moab. 

Key Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Plans and oversees COBS’s short-term facilities needs. 

  • Builds and implements strategy and maintenance plan to ensure long-range sustainability of COBS facilities. Specific duties include analysis of facilities, buildings, and infrastructure to identify safety concerns and necessary repairs; development of systems and tools to track maintenance, repairs, and budget. 

  • Collaborates with the Program Operations Team to support COBS’s long-range strategy and initiatives. Advises the Operations Team on short- and long-term facilities priorities, needs, and resources, including budget planning. 

  • Maintains and improves Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) platform for COBS’s facility management, maintenance, record-keeping, and budgeting. 

  • Supervises, trains, and oversees a 2-4 person on-site facilities team based in Leadville, Colorado and Moab, Utah in conjunction with Rocky Mountain and Southwest Program Directors. 

  • Identifies, hires, and oversees all necessary outside contractors, in alignment with HR practices and policies. 

  • Ensures schedule of preventative, routine, and emergency maintenance for all COBS facilities, including oversight of building, water testing and treatment, maintenance and safety checks. 

  • As needed, serves as primary facilities manager for COBS’ currently inactive basecamp in Marble, Colorado. 

  • Supports other local facility projects and needs as assigned. 

  • Maintains and fine-tunes Facilities Policies that guide day to day safety operations of the Facilities Department. 

  • Ensures compliance with our Outward Bound USA National Safety Standards and facilities priorities. 

  • Manages an OSHA-informed training and assessment program for Facilities and other staff. 

  • Promotes and enhances a culture of safety and risk mitigation at COBS facilities, providing training and instruction on best practices as needed. 

  • Upholds and follows all federal, state, and COBS safety laws, regulations, and policies; where necessary, drafting additional COBS safety policies related to facilities operations. 

  • Maintains availability for on-call emergencies outside of standard working hours.

  • Experience implementing and using CMMS. 

  • Ability to obtain and retain all necessary operator's licenses, certifications or permits. 

  • Acceptable driving record with experience in large vehicles preferred. 

  • Experience using, training, operating, and fixing heavy machinery. 

  • Experience managing inventory of equipment, vehicles, tools, and supplies. 

  • Comfortable working with a diverse team of individuals who may have different backgrounds and beliefs to your own. 

Education and Work Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of facilities-related experience required, including at least 2 years of management experience. 

  • Proven track record of management, supervisory responsibilities, and project planning and management. 

  • Ability to obtain OSHA 30 certification, CPR certification, First Aid certification, and Bloodborne Pathogens certification. 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred. 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to bend, lift, kneel, crawl, and carry up to 65lbs. 

  • Must be able to work around construction sites including underground, at heights and above ground. 

  • Requires sitting at a desk or computer at least 30% of the time. 

  • Must be able to drive to and among facility locations, including drive times of approximately 6 hours. 

Compensation and Benefits 

  • $50,000-$60,000 annual salary range. 

  • Benefits eligibility for medical, dental, and vision insurance, where COBS pays a significant amount toward healthcare premiums and provides employee-paid short- and long-term disability coverage and basic life insurance. 

  • 20 days of Paid Time Off that accrues throughout the first year, with an additional day of PTO added for each consecutive year of service. 

  • 56 hours of paid Sick Leave. 

  • 40 hours of paid time for approved volunteer activities and community service. 

  • 401k eligibility available after one year of service. 

  • ProDeal eligibility.
