Colonna's Shipyard Inc. is Hiring a Senior Estimator Near Norfolk, VA

Overview

Steel America is currently looking for a Senior Estimator within our Fabrication Department. This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Estimate by analyzing blueprints, specifications, proposals, scope of work and other documentation in order to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for fabrication and machining projects
  • Review available plans and specifications to ensure estimate effort is in compliance with all specifications and requirements
  • Inspect projects to validate repair/alteration information and produces estimates based upon those checks for all solicitations assigned; conduct the development of schedules and material procurement lists for all tasks, using Government work specifications, drawings, material lists, SARs, technical manuals, etc.to initiate planning and estimating efforts
  • Ensure complete and accurate understanding of work scope through site visits and liaison with requesting activities and other representatives; document and maintain estimate work sheets, material, quotes and other reference material for reviews, advance planning milestones
  • Prepare fixed price bids estimated by using man-hour labor, by skill/trade area and quotes
  • Analyze blue prints, drawing packages, and other documentation to prepare time, labor and material estimates for both shop and shipboard efforts
  • Prepare comparative estimates as a basis for selecting qualified subcontractors
  • Ensure cost estimates are accurate prior to the submission to management for review and pricing
  • Negotiate contract terms, pricing, change orders, and final settlements with clients
  • Analyze requests for proposals and contract terms and advise of potential business risk (warranties, insurance, and indemnification) and enforce provisions of contract
  • Recommend pricing strategy and contract terms to enable contract negotiations
  • Solicit pricing from material vendors and subcontractors
  • Direct and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in cost estimating for repair, fabrication and assembly work
  • Assist in marketing efforts and follow up of potential customers for work quoted but not contracted. 
  • Analyze cost versus profit to determine the best business strategy to maximize company's dollar
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in management and/or steel fabrication
  • Hands on experience in contract administration
  • Strong working knowledge of Contract Administration and Contract Management.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the manufacturing process, materials and costing methods for heavy steel fabrication.
  • Hands on experience with FAR, DFAR, and various types of contracts (FFP & T&M).
  • Strong problem solving and negotiation skills. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or other related fabrication experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AWS, AISC, ABS and ASME code/certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of respective market area, client opportunities, and competitors.
  • Strong problem solving and negotiation skills. 
  • Possess market analysis experience in order to determine present and future material availability. 
  • Strong PC skills to include Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and AutoCAD
  • Project management, painting, and machine shop experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA, NAVFAC and SSPC requirements are preferred but not required
