Colonial Heights City is Hiring a Recreation Assistant I (Part-time) Near Colonial Heights, VA

(Works up to 28 hours per week to include evenings and weekends)
$12.00 - $14.00 per hour
 
Recreation Assistant I (part-time): Part-time position under close supervision, assists in conducting recreation activities for various age groups as assigned; assist in performing a variety of activities in support of City of Colonial Heights recreation programs, including customer service, clerical, and assisting with the supervision of individual and team sports, events, classes, special programs and recreational activities.The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
 
  • Participate in and conduct recreation activities; attend staff meetings, review current programs and make recommendation to immediate supervisor; and assist in supervising participants involved in recreation programs.
  • Assist in keeping score or records for citywide youth sports program, as needed.
  • Assist in conducting the after-school programs, special events, and youth sports as assigned.
  • Assist as a chaperone at dances, excursions or special events.
  • Assist staff in observing volunteers to ensure they are meeting city and department requirements, and make recommendations to immediate supervisor.
  • Develop participant and spectator interest, enthusiasm and participation.
  • Issue, collect and properly maintain city equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in the set-up of rooms for activities, meetings and programs.
  • Assist in conducting facility rentals to ensure applicant or user complies with city and department policies and procedures.
  • Assist an inquiring customer about programs/services offered, by familiarizing with the department flyers and publications so accurate information is shared.
 
  • At least (1) year of experience working with preschool, school aged and/or teenage youth is required and the ability to work in an outdoor sitting.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Candidates should have knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning and organization; basic rules and understanding of common sports and games; principles of recreation safety and first aid techniques; modern office practices and procedures.
  • In addition, the ability to plan, organize, promote and coordinate programs exercising initiative and creativity; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders and the general public; communicate effectively orally and in writing; produce various computer documents utilizing word processing and graphics applications.
  • Successfully pass a background investigation and pre-employment medical/drug screening.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lifts or carries objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Employee must have some mobility in conducting outdoor recreational activities.
