Job Description

At CoBank, our Senior Vice President, Communications is responsible for the operation of the bank’s Communications industry banking platform in support of the Board of Directors approved business and financial plan. Contributes to the overall management of the bank through participation at the executive level in the development of strategic and operating objectives and plans. Communications is responsible for managing relationships with the bank’s customers in the complex industry sector of communications, characterized by highly sophisticated management teams, private equity sponsors, and dynamic business models. The portfolio includes but is not limited to companies that are engaged as local exchange carriers (LEC), cable companies, data center owner and operators, wireless service providers, fiber optic companies, and tower operating companies. These companies are organized Manages the overall profitability, credit, and operations of a large and diverse portfolio with a national scope that includes collaborative partnership with the Farm Credit System. Serves as an Enterprise Leader and maintains effective relationships with governmental, industry, financial, and community groups to enhance financial performance and business effectiveness

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership, organization, staffing, development, direction, and day-to-day management for the Communications team across two offices to ensure effective allocation of resources to support the achievement of strategic objectives and CoBank’s business plan.
  • Manages Communications business through effective organization of resources to ensure growth, profitability, sound lending, and superior customer service consistent with the directives of board and executive management. Provides consistent direction and develops internal controls which enhance achievement of the bank and group goals while encouraging and developing a marketing focus for the group.
  • Selects, develops, and motivates an effective collaborative management team, who develop appropriate business strategies, set standards of performance, evaluate performance of associates, and generally take actions necessary to allow the division to accomplish established standards of performance. Takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Effectively communicates goals and objectives internally and externally so that customer satisfaction is maintained at high levels and the group/division business objectives are attained.
  • Develops and implements marketing and business development strategies which foster new business, fee income, and innovative customer solutions that leverage the bank’s suite of financial products and services.
  • Complies with the bank’s board approved portfolio strategy.
  • Works with other units of the bank to assure that the Farm Credit System Cooperation Philosophy is successfully executed.
  • Provides appropriate strategic leadership, and builds a cohesive team that is focused on both internal and external customers and is capable of partnering effectively across the firm.
  • Establishes and maintains contacts at the highest levels with important stakeholders, including FCS leaders, trade associations, cooperative councils, universities, governmental organizations, and others who can have a positive impact on the bank’s overall image and operations.
  • Oversees the preparation of the operating budget for areas of responsibility. Participates in the approval process for the overall bank budget. Monitors the achievement of budgetary goals for areas of responsibility and is ultimately responsible for their profitability.
  • Responsible for compliance with regulatory requirements, and internal policy and procedures to ensure a robust controls environment.
  • Participates in special initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business or other relevant discipline.
  • Fifteen (15) years of progressive experience with expert knowledge in banking, corporate finance, debt capital markets and commodity markets. Experience as a senior leader within an institution of comparable scale and complexity required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, CFA, CPA or other advanced degree or designation preferred.
  • Extensive background in finance, credit and business development.
  • Proven management, business development, strategic planning, negotiation, marketing, and sales skills.
  • Strong and broad knowledge of banking, corporate finance, debt capital markets, infrastructure funds, and private equity sponsors.
  • Excellent leadership, people management and organizational development skills, with a demonstrated ability to motivate in a team-oriented and collaborative work environment, and promote, foster and build a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Ability to develop, manage and motivate staff to achieve desired business results.
  • Ability to build and maintain successful relationships with all levels of executives, internal team members, and external stakeholders and partners in the Farm Credit System, as well as representatives of pertinent associations and other organizations that are important to the bank’s business.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications and presentation skills.

Compensation Information

  • Estimated Base Salary Range: $275,000-$320,000
  • Target short-term incentive opportunity:50%
