Description

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee (the Society) is searching for a seasonal Actor-Educator to join a very fun environment and talented team of professionals in supporting one of the most cherished community assets, the Milwaukee County Zoo. This position takes on a holistic view of theater and educational programming offerings within the Zoological Society of Milwaukee's (ZSM) Conservation Education department and its theater program-Kohl's Wild Theater (KWT). The KWT Summer Actor-Educator will serve as the primary performer for At-Habitat character interactions and as an understudy/swing for the KWT mainstage season. The role works closely with the Arts Education Program Manager and Company Supervisor in support of the ZSM's Mission to educate people about the importance of wildlife and animals and support the Milwaukee County Zoo (MCZ), and the Conservation Education department's vision to inspire and empower all members of our community to take conservation action.

This is a part-time seasonal position normally expected to work up to 25 hours/week; Tuesday-Sunday, 10:30am-2:30pm, beginning May 25th through September 2nd (including Memorial Day and Labor Day).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Memorize and execute all performance roles as assigned by the Arts Education Program Manager.
    • Perform all improvisational At-Habitat character interactions as directed by the Arts Education Program Manager.
    • Perform in multiple roles in the KWT mainstage season, serving as swing and understudy for all KWT company members and supporting stage management with duties as assigned.
    • Adhere to all script off-book dates as set by Arts Education Manager.
    • Incorporate performance notes and feedback from the Arts Education Program Manager and Company Supervisor.
    • Arrive on time to all performance shifts, rehearsals, fittings, and meetings as scheduled.
  • Develop and administer supplemental education materials.
    • Deliver and assist in the development of educational content and activities for At-Habitat character interactions.
    • Assist in the training of actors to support At-Habitat character interactions.
    • Attend professional development opportunities related to education and theater provided by ZSM or other partner organizations.
  • Provide assistance and support to Arts Education Full-Time staff members.
    • Assist in the administration of evaluations and collection of data for KWT summer stage and At-Habitat experiences, e.g. audience comment cards, etc.
    • Assist Arts Education Full-Time staff with clerical and administrative work as needed.
  • Set up, break down, and maintain all technical equipment.
    • Learn and participate in all steps of production set-up and strike as outlined by the KWT Company Supervisor.
    • Report equipment damage to Stage Manager or Company Supervisor.
    • Assist in equipment maintenance.
  • Represent the ZSM and MCZ onsite and in the community.
  • Greet, guide, and create a personal experience for Zoo visitors.
  • Project a positive image and energy.
  • Assist in marketing KWT programming in the community.

Qualifications

  • Two years of professional, semi-professional, or educational theater experience.
  • Experience in a classroom setting is a plus.
  • Experience with a touring theater company a plus.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Demonstration of excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills; Spanish or second language fluency a plus.
  • Must have reliable transportation to the Milwaukee County Zoo.
