City of Petaluma is Hiring a Part Time Emergency Medical Technician Near Petaluma, CA

Part Time Emergency Medical Technician

The Petaluma Fire Department currently has approximately 4-6 openings for Part Time Emergency Medical Technicians to work shifts on the Basic Life Support (BLS) Ambulance. 
This part time position does not offer any benefits and hours worked will vary but typically will not exceed 20 hours per week.

POSITION SUMMARYRespond to medical emergencies, and other emergency and non-emergency situations, and take appropriate action to protect life; perform various staff support assignments in addition to normal emergency response activities. 

Provide emergency medical care at the basic life support level, including initial patient and situation assessment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and trauma emergency medical care.

Prepare patients and assist Firefighter/Paramedics in advanced life support emergency medical care.

Operate equipment, such as an automated external defibrillator or bag valve mask resuscitator, in advanced life support environments.

Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment.

Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.

Immobilize patient for placement on stretcher and ambulance transport, using backboard or other spinal immobilization device. Safely operate a gurney in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Drive ambulance unit to specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher.

Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about situation, to arrange reception of victims, or to receive instructions for further treatment.

Coordinate with treatment center personnel to obtain patients' vital statistics and medical history, to determine the circumstances of the emergency, and to administer emergency treatment.

Coordinate work with other emergency medical team members or police or fire department personnel.

Decontaminate ambulance interior following treatment of patient with infectious disease and report case to proper authorities.

Maintain vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenish first aid equipment and supplies.

Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.

Read maps and navigate along roads and through traffic while driving an emergency vehicle.

Comfort and reassure patients.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
Modern EMS principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
Medical, legal and ethical issues associated with EMT responsibilities.
Body mechanics, safe lifting and carrying techniques, and principles of moving patients.
Principles and practices of effective communication.
Basic principles and practices of emergency medical care at the basic life support level.
Patient assessment practices associated with providing emergency medical care.
Techniques and practiced used for immobilizing patients for safe transport.
Emergency vehicle operation practices.
EMS protocols, National or Sonoma County.
Interagency emergency operation protocols.
Map reading.
Communication techniques used in stressful situations.
Safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work.
Basic computer usage for data entry, report writing, and medical information retrieval.
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Experience:

Experience working as an Emergency Medical Technician on an ambulance is desirable.

License/Certificate:
Must possess a valid California Class C driver license.
Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, either through the National Registry EMT or State of California. Must maintain local certification requirements.
In addition, possession of accreditation in the County of Sonoma as an EMT is required prior to completing EMT orientation and being assigned to a shift.
Other Requirements:
Must be willing to work shifts as structured in the Fire Department, which may include nights and weekends.
 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk; use hands to palpate, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; lift, push, pull and carry 120 pounds; talk and hear; taste and smell. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; works in slippery and/or uneven surfaces; and around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Subject to vibration while performing essential functions. Frequently exposed to bodily fluids and infectious pathogens. Occasionally exposed to solvents and other chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
