General Description of Position:

Under guided supervision, the Wastewater Operator performs various routine and repetitive tasks to construct, repair, and maintain the City’s wastewater collections systems, and other sewer utility operations.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Functions:

  • Represents the City of Van Alstyne in a professional, appropriate manner at all times
  • The following duties are typical for this position.
  • Responsible for all daily operations of the facility including SCADA system, cleaning, maintenance, sampling, reporting, record keeping, quality control, planning, improvements, and correspondence with state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor, operate, and maintain water treatment equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, electric motor controllers, blowers, filters, membrane systems, chemical feed equipment, UV treatment units, and well field equipment.
  • Monitor water treatment processes and disinfection processes.
  • Determines and performs sludge wasting from aerobic digester.
  • Perform various laboratory tests and analysis on process streams for control and reporting purposes.
  • Inspect various water treatment equipment such as flow meters, pumps, clarifiers, chlorinators, blowers, valves, and filters.
  • Monitor and adjust plant equipment and processes to ensure that the water treatment plant is operating in accordance with all applicable State and Federal requirements.
  • Complies with all regulatory, environmental, and safety rules and standards, as well as company policies.
  • Perform tasks related to utility operations such as sampling, monitoring, and testing required to maintain compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations governing the water system.
  • Assist in the performance of regular and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on all water infrastructure, equipment, and machinery.
  • Regularly check for leaks and/or damages to infrastructure
  • Clean work areas, trucks, and facilities.
  • Inventory truck and stock with parts/tools as needed, responsible for maintaining those parts/tools, and is accountable for any lost tools/parts.
  • Maintain open communications with the supervisors regarding processes, operation, and malfunctions, as well as make recommendations for repairs and improvements to the systems.
  • Perform on call responsibilities to respond to emergencies and breakdowns at the plant and pump stations as scheduled.
  • Adhere to industry and Utility safety standards, policies, practices, and procedures. Provides services in accordance with all applicable regulatory requirements. Prepares submits required records and reports.
  • Ensures cleanliness of water facilities and cleans equipment as necessary
  • Operates various light to heavy construction equipment and tools to include tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, sewer machine, jack hammers, water main tapping machine, air compressors, trailers, compactors, weed-eaters, augers, tillers, welders, cut off saws, vehicles, and power and handheld tools.
  • Conducts daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tolls such as washing, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing; checking fluid levels, lubrication, point check, tire pressure check, cleaning filters and screens, cleaning of wind shields; insure road worthiness by checking the operation and presence of all lights, horns, braking systems, wipers, road hazard equipment, securing loads and other items required by the Department of Transportation before allowing equipment on public roads.
  • Identifies and informs his/her supervisor of potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, public inquiries of the general public, and the status of work activities.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Tends influent pumps, blowers, feed pumps, centrifuges, dry and wet chemical feeders, aerators, telescopic settings, wet well, and other equipment used to decontaminate wastewater; reads and records effluent flow meter.
  • Inspects and cleans filters, tanks, clarifier weirs, scum pit, and bar screens.
  • Maintain UV treatment units.
  • Determines and performs sludge wasting from aerobic digester.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment; assists in repair of equipment.
  • Performs routine cleaning of equipment, grounds, and work areas.
  • Performs routine electrical work.
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance and repairs on all wastewater treatment equipment.
  • Performs routine welding, cutting and fabrication as needed.
  • Ensures proper operation and routine maintenance of sewage pumping stations.
  • Operates backhoe to load trucks with solid waste; operates dump truck to haul sludge to disposal areas.
  • Must be available (on-call) during non-working hours.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer and laptop; uses meter reading and repair equipment; safely drives City vehicles to work sites; transports materials and assists other staff, as required; keeps maintenance records on all assigned equipment.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the public through courteous, professional, and cooperative interactions; ability to interact tactfully with customers during stressful situations.
  • Performs all job duties, tasks, and activities according to work instructions, defined procedures, and policies.
  • Safely performs all work activities and follows all safety rules including safe and effective use of personal protective equipment.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required by the supervisor

  • Knowledge of the City’s policies and procedures.
  • Progressive knowledge of the methods and techniques used to supervise and coordinate work crews in the work area.

  • The operation and general maintenance of equipment commonly found in a water treatment facility.
  • Basic laboratory testing practices used for process control and regulatory compliance.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience operating an activated sludge wastewater plant required.
  • Must possess and continue to possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must have a minimum class “C” wastewater treatment certification issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality or be able to obtain a class “C” wastewater treatment certification within 6 months.

Working Conditions

Machines, Tools, Equipment

Knowledge and ability to properly use and operate small, medium, and large trucks, probe rod, pumps, power tools, and hand tools.

Protective Equipment Provided

Hard hat, gloves, boots, mask, and eye protection.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is $18.00 to $24.00 hourly, $37,440.00 to $49,920.00 annually. Starting salary is commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.

The Wastewater Operator is a full-time nonexempt position.

Hours: At will. Mandatory overtime and on-call as needed.

TMRS Retirement. 7% employee contribution with a 2 to 1 employer match. Vested after five years of service. TMRS provides 1x your annual salary in life insurance benefit. Employees are retirement eligible upon vesting and at least age 60 or with 20 years of service credit at any age as well as restricted prior service credit.
