CITY OF SUNRISE is Hiring a Zoning Technician 012623 Near Fort Lauderdale, FL

NATURE OF WORK
 
This classification involves responsible entry-level professional planning work in support of the City of Sunrise Community Development Department's Planning Division. 
 
An employee in this classification of work is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan. The employee is required to perform timely review of, but not limited to, residential and commercial permits, sign permits, paint permits, special event permits, zoning determinations, and other relevant permits for compliance with the City of Sunrise Code of Ordinances including the Land Development Code. , as well conduct research on assigned subject matters. Other assignments include conducting research on assigned subject matters and providing recommendations. This position includes extensive interaction with the public, design professionals and residents. 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 
  • Provides customer service to applicants, residents and business owners, by assisting in processing and reviewing of development applications, building permits and other regulatory measures as required and as directed. 
  • Reviews permits and plans for compliance with the Land Development Code and all other relevant regulations. 
  • Coordinates review of Special Event Permits with multiple review agencies. 
  • Coordinates with the Code Enforcement Division to ensure that business tax receipts are issued in accordance with the provisions of the appropriate zoning regulations. 
  • Assists in the preparation and assembly of backup material for Planning and Zoning Board, Board of Adjustment, Local Planning Agency, City Commission, Special Magistrate and any other relevant bodies May present cases to the Boards and any other relevant meetings as necessary. 
  • Disseminates information (oral and written) regarding land development principles, standards and practices related to the Land Development Code. 
  • Performs related work as required
EDUCATION
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in urban planning or a closely related field. (Master's Degree is preferred and may be substituted for the professional experience.)
  • PROOF OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
 
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Minimum one (1) year professional experience in urban planning or a closely related field or any combination of education PLUS experience.
  • Master's Degree may be substituted for the experience.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and permit tracking software is desirable.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 
Physical:
 
Light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to twenty (20) pounds. Descending and climbing stairways and extended periods of standing observation may be required during field activities. Must have the ability to safely operate a City issued motor vehicle.
 
Work Environment:
 
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
 
Sensory:
 
The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Requires ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload and to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate while completing tasks within established time frames. It also requires interaction with employees from all City departments/divisions and the general public.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 
  • Some knowledge of zoning regulations, administration, enforcement procedures, and related codes, ordinances, regulations and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of current technology, including Microsoft Office, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and permit tracking software. 
  • Ability to read and interpret building and development plans and specifications, and legal documents relative to the provisions of the regulations being administered. 
  • Ability to accurately track and route multiple plans/projects. 
  • Ability to meet and communicate effectively with the general public, applicants, outside agencies, and other relevant parties. 
  • Ability to understand and interpret policies and procedures of various departments and provide service to the public. 
  • Ability to collect, analyze and organize information and develop sound recommendations. 
  • Ability to research and develop information from a variety of sources. 
  • Ability to write persuasive but tactful letters and memoranda. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment with professional and technical personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other City departments, coworkers, supervisors, outside agencies, and the general public.
