NATURE OF WORK
This classification involves specialized work in planning, organizing, and conducting a variety of recreational activities at City playgrounds, recreation centers, parks, and related facilities. An employee in this position assists in promoting, organizing, preparing, and leading indoor and outdoor recreation facilities; conducts activities with assigned groups within the general recreation program; oversees cultural arts contracted classes; manages theater shows, art gallery openings, and events; makes sure playground equipment is safe; oversees youth programs; plans trips and excursions; recruits instructors for classes; recruits volunteers; and purchases supplies. This position also assists with front desk, interacts with patrons, and renders first aid as needed. 
  
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 
  • Organizes, teaches, and leads various age groups in organized recreation activities such as team games and sports, arts and crafts, camping and nature lore, folk dancing, community singing, and informal story telling.
  • Acts as house manager for theater performances; manages and books rentals of theaters and amphitheaters as needed; and assists with box office.
  • Manages contracts for cultural arts classes; hosts and assists with art gallery openings.
  • Promotes programs via regular media and social media.
  • Plans trips and excursions for seniors including research and pricing.
  • Makes sure play equipment and playgrounds are in readiness; encourages good sportsmanship on the part of players and spectators alike; and reports concerning games, giving such data as names of players, scores, forfeits, violations, and protests.
  • Issues and collects playground equipment such as balls, bats, and horseshoes.
  • Maintains discipline on indoor and outdoor play areas; assists in organizing such games as football, basketball, croquet, and ping pong; and maintains safety of participants and spectators.
  • Teaches Startsmart sport classes.
  • Renders first aid in cases of minor injuries.
  • Performs and coordinates minor maintenance work and grounds keeping duties in order to prevent equipment malfunctions and to provide a clean, safe, and orderly facility appearance; does minor repair work on recreational equipment.
  • Coordinates recreation activities at small facilities.
  • Assists in planning recreation programs as assigned; schedules league games; and meets with community members to discuss recreation needs.
  • Records facility and worker activities on standardized report forms and files.
  • Assists in the enforcement of recreation center rules and regulations in order to maintain order and prevent accidents.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones; preparing correspondence; running errands; picking up supplies needed for activities/programs; leading recreation activities and programs; making arrangements for rental and use of recreation facilities; reviewing incident/accident reports related to specific areas of responsibility; helping set up tables/chairs for classes, etc.; and responding to and resolving complaints from program participants/patrons.
  • Helps with development of the Sunrise Leadership Academy (SLA); assists with Animal Festival.
  • Recruits instructors and volunteers; runs fingerprint and background checks as needed.
  • Schedules and supervises staff.
  • Works evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to accommodate recreation programs as needed.
  • Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, preferably supplemented by college level coursework in recreation, education or physical education
  • PROOF OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
 
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
 
  • One (1) year of work experience in planning, organizing, and conducting a variety of recreational programs for a variety of age groups, preferably with supervisory experience.
  • Previous theatre/cultural arts experience desired.
  • Experience working with the public, strong organizational and communication skills desired.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.
 
 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: 
 
Physical:
  • Light to moderate physical effort required, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to thirty (30) pounds. The position requires the ability to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time. Incumbent must have the ability to effectively and safely operate City-issued motor vehicles.
 
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in various environments including standard office, recreational facilities, and outdoors. Work hours may vary as needed and may include evenings, weekends and holidays. Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, severe temperatures and exposure to water. The position may require travel to various locations in the City of Sunrise area.
 Sensory: 
  • The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Requires ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload and to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate while completing tasks within established time frames. It also requires interaction with employees and officials from all City departments/divisions, vendors and the general public.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of public recreation, including an understanding of the activities which comprise a community recreation program
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of first aid and CPR
  • Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the area of assignment and effective precautionary measures
  • Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of the facilities and equipment used both in indoor and outdoor recreation activities
  • Ability to lead, instruct and develop interest in recreation activities and promote good sportsmanship and positivity
  • Ability to recognize and prevent dangerous situations from arising
  • Ability to assist in enforcing facility rules
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all age group participants and the general public
  • Ability to keep records, prepare reports and maintain material inventory
  • Ability to express ideas thoroughly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, other employees, supervisors, other agencies, instructors, community leaders and the general public
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to administer basic first aid
  • Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program
  • Ability to supervise the activities of volunteers and contracted instructors in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale
  • Ability to develop, coordinate and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program
  • Ability to plan and organize workload to achieve stated objectives in a timely, efficient, and effective manner
  • Ability to withstand pressure of competing priorities and varied responsibilities and work efficiently and effectively to develop win-win solutions
  • Knowledge of RecTrac computer software is preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required
  • Must have the ability to effectively and safely operate City-issued motor vehicles
