Standard Work Schedule: 12 Hour Shifts 8:00AM - 8:00PM

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs responsible semi-skilled work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required.

Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Makes regular tours of plant and equipment (including buildings);
• Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc.;
• Records readings from meters and instruments;
• Checks functioning of equipment;
• Regulates and adjust motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
• Performs various tests; takes samples of influent and effluent;
• Operates dewatering press; changes disk charts;
• Skims grease from settling tanks;
• Pumps sludge, drains tanks, cleans clarifiers;
• Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment;
• Makes minor or emergency repairs; performs minor preventive maintenance on plant equipment;
• Performs general plant maintenance duties;
• Follows all safety policies and procedures in performing duties;
• Performs related tasks as required or as assigned.

JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: This position involves work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, use of hands and fingers, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect mechanical parts for small defects; prepare and analyze data and figures, do extensive reading, and use measurement devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat, noise; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to job hazards including exposure to chemicals and moving mechanical parts; and may be subject to wearing a respirator and working in narrow or confined spaces. An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect defects in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to work weekends and holidays, respond to calls during non-scheduled work hours; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations; some skill in the use and care of hand tools.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in a wastewater treatment plant; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain Grade II Wastewater Treatment certification within 18 months of employment; possession of a valid N.C. driver's license.

This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
