City of San Marcos, TX is Hiring a Community Engagement Coordinator Near San Marcos, TX

We are searching for a talented, innovative, and professional individual to conduct community outreach and represent the animal shelter through initiatives that increase visibility and raise awareness throughout the community. This individual must be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and community-driven to take on this exciting role. This position requires someone equipped with a positive attitude and readiness to be a team player in saving animal lives.

JOB SUMMARY

The Community Engagement Coordinator, under the direction of the Animal Services Manager, serves as a key member of the City’s efforts in the animal shelter’s live outcome rate and in solving animal issues in the community. This position creates, implements and evaluates marketing strategies, public information campaigns and outreach programs to engage the public in ultimately reducing animal shelter intake and getting animals out of the shelter as quickly as possible. Innovation and transparency will guide this position in focusing on the root problems impacting responsible pet ownership, animal shelter intake, and the amount of time animals spend in the shelter. This position will utilize all available avenues of communication, including digital communications, printed materials, social media, and special events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Engages the community in solving animal issues:
  • Selects and utilizes appropriate communications channels to engage customers and the community to reunite lost pets with their owners, to prevent shelter intakes, and to be transparent about the shelter’s current needs and capacity issues.
  • Designs, develops, and coordinates the distribution of flyers, press releases and other marketing materials for programs/events and educational purposes. 
  • Assists in obtaining donations of money, supplies, and services for the shelter, shelter pets, and owned animals; connects pet owners with available resources.

 2. Coordinates and implements special programs and events:

  • Develops and implements creative marketing and advertising plans and disseminates related collateral material.
  • Fosters existing and new strategic relationships; collaborates with internal and external stakeholders/partners to further the mission of the animal shelter.
  • Maintains a calendar of outreach activities, community events, workshops, appearances, adoption events, and microchip events.
  • Coordinates, implements, and evaluates special events related to adoptions, volunteers, fosters, rescues, and responsible pet ownership. 

 3. Utilizes social media platforms and other forms of electronic media: 

  • Maintains Animal Services web pages and Facebook page with current pictures, announcements, events, statistics, testimonials, and information; trains shelter staff and volunteers to assist with updates.
  • Coordinates with shelter staff on integration of the animal shelter database with communications functions.

 4. Performs administrative functions:

  • Conducts research projects, assists with budget, reports, open records requests, news clips, mailing lists, presentations, and proclamations.
  • Assists with grant applications, award nominations, speeches and talking points.
  • Advises the Animal Services Manager of potential problems and opportunities in public relations and marketing.

 5. Provides key support for Animal Services emergencies:

  • Serves as a key member of the Animal Services team during emergencies, including after-hours response. 
  • Within prescribed parameters, maintains appropriate communication with staff, other departments, and the public. 

 6. Other duties as assigned.

DECISION MAKING

  • Advanced reasoning skills for dealing with customers, volunteers, staff, partner organizations, and advocacy groups; ability to understand, accept and effectively communicate organizational procedures, mission and goals (spay & neuter/disposition/euthanasia/public health); ability to maintain professionalism in all situations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree required preferably in marketing, public relations, public administration or related fields. 
  • Strong skills in written and verbal communication and social media platform development. 
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years’ work experience in media, public relations, community outreach or associated field.
  • Experience with community organizations, public officials, event coordination & public speaking.
  • Bilingual 
  • Responsible pet owner and familiarity with animal sheltering, rescue, or adoption.

JOB DIMENSIONS

  • Knowledge of video editing, graphic design, photography and associated software including Adobe Creative Suite Products, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere, and Lightroom or equivalent.
  • Skills in social media including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Hootsuite, as well as management and result tracking programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to interface professionally with the public, City Council, boards, commissions and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to leverage relationships to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Ability to manage projects of varying size and complexity.
  • A flexible work schedule and the ability to work occasional nights, weekends, and during emergency events or natural disasters. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include lifting up to 30 pounds occasionally. Subject to sitting, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, hearing and talking frequently; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing, balancing and foot controls occasionally; kneeling, crouching, bending and twisting rarely.

Working conditions are occasional exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, shelter animals, aggressive animals, sick/injured animals, and emergency or investigation scenes.
