The annual salary for this position is $103,884/per year at the top of the range, with approved Cost of Living Adjustmentsin 2023 (5%), 2024 (4%), and 2025 (4%). The Senior Accountant, under general direction, performs difficult and complex work in accounting and related aspects of financial management, provides lead and technical direction to subordinate accountants and accounting assistants and performs related work as required. Incumbents in this role are primarily responsible for the accounting, cost control, and accounting systems functions. This is a working supervisor position where incumbents must work at the full journeyman level and provide lead direction to lower-level employees.The Ideal Candidate Will:- Have experience with grants administration accounting.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: - Performs and reviews a variety of accounting activities including general and subsidiary ledger accounting to include cash receipts, payroll, accounts payable; financial reporting; budget monitoring; records retention; internal and external auditing; contract management; and insurance administration including claims handling.
- Provides lead direction and training to subordinate accountants and accounting assistants; reviews performance of subordinates and submits recommendations to supervisor; supervises subordinates in accounting and bookkeeping activities such as receipts and disbursements, expenses, and tax payments, and maintaining accounting controls.
- Reviews and analyzes accounting and record-keeping methods and procedures; identifies opportunities for and suggest improvements in accounting and record-keeping procedures.
- Prepares a variety of complex reports which may include but not be limited to statistics, legal requirements, financial record keeping requirements, fund accounting, and data processing.
- Establishes and supervises the maintenance of capital improvement records and other cost records.
- Supervises and coordinates external and internal auditing of City accounting records; revises audit reports of agencies (i.e. housing authority) using funds under the City's control; makes recommendations concerning the various recording and reporting systems.
- Responds to requests for information from City departments and other governmental agencies, and is able to explain the information if necessary.
- Prepares correspondence.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Accounting principles, practices, and methods; governmental fund accounting and budgeting; auditing methods, techniques, principles, and practices; modern office management; and supervisory principles and practices.
Ability to: Obtain and analyze complex accounting, physical, operating, functional, and other data; prepare clear and comprehensive financial analyses and reports; understand and apply rules, regulations, and laws; devise and supervise the installation of accounting methods, forms, and procedures; establish and maintain effective professional work relationships with colleagues, subordinates, associates, and superiors; supervise and review the work of clerical and accounting staff; use modern technologies, office equipment, programs, and systems, and maintain an up-to-date and current skill set.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a major that can be directly related to the knowledge and ability requirements
AND three years of professional accounting experience that would demonstrate the application of the knowledge and abilities listed as minimum qualifications.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:A master's degree with significant coursework in accounting, finance, business administration, and/or experience with grants administration accounting.
