City Olympia is Hiring a Maintenance Worker I Near Olympia, WA

About the Position

We are currently seeking to fill a regular part-time .5 FTE Maintenance Worker I position at The Olympia Center and the Harbor House. This position is geared towards custodial duties. General cleaning of rooms, offices, lobbies, halls, restrooms and room setup/takedowns, frequent customer interaction with a service-first attitude, minor maintenance repairs and floor care are examples of some of the responsibilities. Work hours are Saturdays, 1:30pm-10:00pm, Sundays,12:30pm-6:00pm and Mondays 3:00pm-10:30pm. This is an AFSCME represented position, local 608-1. This position also requires covering for sick leave and vacation requests for other staff when needed.

  • Responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and/or cleaning in and around The Olympia Center.
  • Perform custodial duties to include cleaning and sanitizing of restrooms and kitchens, and cleaning windows, blinds, vents and other duties as assigned.
  • Complete minor plumbing repairs, patching and painting, weed flowerbeds. May perform minor snow removal around The Olympia Center sidewalks.
  • Operation of small hand tools, backpack blower/vacuum, floor scrubber, upright-lift, buffer, wet vacs, and carpet extractor.
  • Responsible for providing a safe, clean environment and listening to Center users in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Assist widely diverse groups using the Center including general renters, city department staff and senior services staff.
  • Direct questions about recreation classes and general facility use to the Public Service Representatives.
  • Check out equipment to gymnasium and party pack users.
  • Maintain and repair equipment as necessary and to the level of training provided.
  • Prepare meeting rooms for occupancy, including all room arrangements such as setting up and taking down collapsible tables, stacking and unstacking chairs, placing tables and chairs, connecting audio/video equipment. Preparing and delivering refreshment carts as needed.
  • Prepare the gymnasium for use including setup of volleyball standards, pickle ball nets, score clocks, raising/lowering curtain, and any basketball hoop and backboard adjustments.
  • Routinely monitor all areas to ensure conditions are within standards.
  • Complete reports or forms as necessary regarding Center activities and use.
  • Assist in the emergency evacuation of the building, including physical removal of people unable to assist themselves from the building if necessary.
  • Assists with Percival Landing moorage including boat registration and public contact in and around Percival Landing.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic building maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining small manual/power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work and communicate with diverse groups and individuals, including seniors and youth.
  • Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations and request assistance as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently from general guidelines and as a member of a service oriented workgroup.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work alone.
  • Ability to project a commitment to public service and work with the public in a friendly, tactful, caring manner.
  • Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity.
  • Demonstrated punctual, regular and reliable attendance is required.
Education/Experience
  • One year general work experience required.
  • Experience in basic building maintenance or general building cleaning and upkeep preferred.
  • In person public contact and customer service experience a must.
Special Requirements
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check required for appointment.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.
  • Able to acquire CPR/First aid card within 6 months.

  • Employees working in the Olympia Center are in constant, daily contact with the users of building.
  • The Center attracts a widely diverse group of people and friendliness, tact, courtesy and an orientation toward public service are critical to the Center's success.
  • Some individuals may pose an immediate or potential threat to the Center, the employees and/or other Center users.
  • Staff must remain calm and in control regardless of the situation and call for the assistance of other Center staff or the Police Department when necessary.

  • The Maintenance Worker I (Olympia Center) is responsible for performing assigned duties efficiently and properly, and in a manner that assures the protection of City property and the safety of Center users and employees.
Working Conditions
  • Olympia Center employees work in a large, busy, multi-use public facility.
  • The Olympia Center is a 56,000 square foot building with multiple floor levels.
  • Operating hours include daytime, evenings, weekends and occasional holidays.
  • Olympia Center Maintenance staff complete scheduled work projects throughout the Center while being responsive to Center user needs.
  • Stress associated with addressing and resolving conflict, enforcement of rules, and competing interests and priorities is routine.
  • Job duties may expose the employee to toxic materials such as cleaning chemicals and bodily fluids.
  • Olympia Center users and customers must be observed and monitored.
  • Unacceptable behaviors and activities must be addressed according to Center policy and may become confrontational in nature occasionally requiring the assistance of the Olympia Police Department.
