Performs professional accounting tasks; maintains and reconciles journals, ledgers, and financial reports; interprets financial records; prepares financial statements and reports; and participates in the design and revision of accounting systems. Exercises initiative and independent judgment in creating, organizing, maintaining and systematically reviewing financial records. Position may require supervision of clerical and/or administrative staff.

  • Maintains accounting record systems for the receipt and disbursement of federal, state, and other municipal funds
  • Compiles and prepares financial data for analysis or use in the preparation of required reports, statements, or budgets
  • Participates in fiscal year end closing, including recording accruals and adjusting and closing entries, preparation of audit work papers and preparation of the City's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)
  • Reconciles various accounts and subsidiary systems to the general ledger maintaining and balancing journals
  • Participates in the testing and implementation of new or upgraded computerized financial systems
  • Verifies trial balances, detail appropriations and expenditures; reviews reports, vouchers, requisitions, invoices and other financial data for accuracy, completeness and conformance with procedures, guidelines and generally accepted accounting principles; interprets financial records and prepares reports concerning the financial condition and conduct of the applicable entity.

  • Supervises and trains administrative and clerical personnel on an assigned basis.
  • Performs related work as required
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or a closely related field
  2. One (1) to three (3) years of accounting experience preferably in a governmental setting including, preparing and analyzing financial transactions and statements; evaluating efficiency, internal controls and conformance with accounting principles. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
  3. Professional work experience in accounting for a state, county or local government agency or private organization directly involved in such areas as preparing and analyzing financial transactions and statements; evaluating efficiency, internal controls and conformance with accounting principles; and reconciling accounts to the general ledger may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee's Department Head will determine who will be required to work.
 
Depending on the number of applications and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes.
