Housing Inspector (Special Services ARPA)

Job Description

Under general supervision, the Housing Inspectors will inspect conditionally selected, occupied homes to gather information about the home using an inspection checklist form. The Housing Inspector must be detail oriented, possess strong interpersonal skills, and knowledgeable of rehabilitation of occupied residential properties in the City of Detroit. Housing Inspectors may also provide assistance in the daily supervision of construction. Housing Inspectors work with other construction team personnel and under the direction of the Construction Manager or designee. 

This is a temporary, non-exempt assignment on a 40 hours per week basis starting as soon as possible and ending no later than 06/30/2024. The standard work hours of the position are 9am to 5:30pm with a 30-minute lunch; occasional evening and weekend work hours as needed.

The position compensation range is $20 – $22/hour depending on experience. Employees will use their own vehicle and be reimbursed for fuel usage.

  • Examines the interior and exterior of participant homes to gather information about the conditions and signs of deterioration.
  • May perform auditing of data gathered from the home visits.
  • Ensures accurate documentation of the conditions observed.
  • Refers participants to Renew Detroit Program Specialists regarding specifics of program status.
  • Tracks on-the-job mileage and completes mileage reimbursement submissions in accordance with City of Detroit and ARPA policies. 
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required, preferably from a Trade School. 
  • One (1) year of experience in residential construction is required.
  • Reliable transportation for travel to jobsites daily is required.
  • Roofing knowledge is strongly desired.
  • Knowledgeable of safety practices for construction worksites is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to perform data entry into Microsoft Excel, Smartsheet, Oracle, Salesforce or other relevant tools with minimal errors.
  • Familiarity with and passion for Detroit, a must.

License / Certificates

  • Valid state Driver's License is required to travel to jobsites daily.
