CITY OF DEERFIELD BEACH is Hiring a Mechanic Near Deerfield, FL

Under general supervision, performs preventative maintenance services, inspects, diagnoses, and repairs automotive and heavy-duty trucks and equipment. Performs a variety of tasks requiring specialized knowledge and skills. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.

Salary Range $21.50 - $33.33

  • Diagnoses, repairs, and/or replaces defective parts; repairs consist of, but are not limited to, engine overhaul, repair/replacement of brakes, transmissions, clutches, motor parts, electrical/electronic systems, air conditioning and heating systems, hydraulic systems, gear boxes, belts, gaskets, etc.
  • Services and performs minor maintenance such as greasing, lubricating, and cleaning of tools and equipment; checks and changes fluids, spark plugs, etc., service batteries; replaces and/or adjust headlights, windshield wipers, tires, turn signals, vehicle fluids, blades, etc.
  • Performs light welding as required.
  •  Maintains work area and shop in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Operates City vehicle to pick-up parts and supplies from vendors, to road test vehicles repaired, or to make service calls.
  • Operates power tools and equipment to perform repairs such as pneumatic wrenches, machine tools, (lathes, grinding machines) welding and flame cutting equipment, jacks, cranes, hoists, etc.
  • Completes required paper work utilizing fleet maintenance software program associated with repairing the vehicles, documenting parts usage and accounting for repair time.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning programs.
  • Provides consultation and assistance regarding specific matters within identified area of expertise.
  • Operates computer terminal, photocopier, facsimile machine, and other office equipment if required.
  • May repair small engines and equipment.
  • Assist senior mechanics in the completion of project work.
  • May assist with emergency calls and repairs.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualification Required
High School Diploma or equivalent or completion of a vocational training program in the area of automotive or heavy equipment mechanics, and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in automotive, light and/or heavy vehicle and equipment repair.
Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. (must remain active throughout employment)

Required Certifications
One (1) current ASE certification or two (2) Automotive Manufacturer’s certificates from an established dealership in varied automotive repair specialties such as electrical, drivability, heating and air conditioning, engine repair, etc. or must be able to obtain One (1) current ASE within 6 months of employment. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of automobile and truck engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, brakes, air conditioning and heating, transmissions and hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of the operation and use of related equipment and tools.
  • Skill in servicing and making repairs to vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose vehicle and equipment problems.

Physical Demands
The physical demands involve balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, depth perception, driving, far acuity, feeling, manual dexterity, hearing, kneeling, lifting, near acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperamental changes (i.e. warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc). The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to noise: there is sufficient noise to cause the workers to shout in order to be heard above the surrounding noise level. The worker is subject to vibration: exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body. The worker is subject to hazards: includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places or exposure to chemicals. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The worker is subject to oils: there is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids. The worker is required to wear a respirator. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires them to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, work or shift hours, and department needs.

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm (occasional weekends)

Emergency Management Responsibilities
Note: During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as hurricane, or other emergency situations and are expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
