Job Location: Public Safety Facility - Chamblee, GA

Description

The Bailiff is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, neutrality, integrity, and confidentiality of the court system. The Bailiff prevents potentially life-threatening activities directed toward judges, court personnel, witnesses, defendants, prisoners, and the general public; maintains order in the courtrooms.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide security for the Court (Arraignment & Environmental) and possess ability to effectively handle potentially volatile situations.
  • Responsible for checking in all court participants, inspecting bags, etc.
  • Secure Court sessions by providing protection and assistance for Court personnel and the public. Provide direction to individuals coming before the court.
  • Effectively communicate with the Presiding Judge, Associate Judges, Court Administrator, Court staff, citizens, attorneys, and other law enforcement agencies to exchange information and ensure court security.
  • Maintain accurate records and keep city materials, reports, and documents confidential as provided by policy and law.
  • Provide any service to assist the Judge in conducting Court Sessions and any necessary services to insure the daily operation of the Court
  • Effectively communicate well with the general public to answer questions, take complaints, and assist in any way possible.
  • Provide quality service that continuously improves, that meets or exceeds public expectations, and that ensures all are treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
  • Assist in conducting all Court sessions, including handling of case files and their presentation for hearing to the Judge or Magistrate, escort defendants and other persons to the bench and/or other court offices.
  • Transport (if necessary), escort and secure prisoners
  • Handle and obtain fingerprints as necessary
  • At the close of court sessions inspect the facility for safety and cleanliness
  • Provide security for City Council meetings
  • Due to the nature of the job performed by bailiffs, assistance to the court may take on various forms not listed above. Generally speaking, a bailiff must be willing to take on any task which he or she may be called upon to perform by the presiding judge or court administrator

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Good working knowledge of modern security methods, procedures, and objectives.
  • Knowledge & understanding of:
    • Georgia and Federal criminal statutes, rules and regulations, and case law, general practices related to law enforcement, and administrative practices and procedures, and the geography of the community
    • Principles, practices, and methods related to law enforcement and criminal justice administration
    • Civil and criminal codes and city ordinances
  • Treats others with dignity and respect and maintains a friendly demeanor; values the contributions of others
  • Writes and speaks effectively, using conventions proper to the situation; asks questions to ensure understanding; exercises a professional approach with others using all appropriate tools of communication; uses consideration and tact when offering opinions
  • Ability to exercise good judgment by making sound and well-informed decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; makes effective and timely decisions, even when data are limited, or solutions produce unpleasant consequences.
  • Ability to develop and maintain partnerships with others, both inside and outside the organization, who can provide information, resources, and advice. Builds constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect.
