City of Brighton is Hiring a Wastewater Operator A Near Brighton, CO

TREATMENT OPERATOR A $28.25 - $38.71 (Starting range - $28.25 to $29.94)

DEFINITION

Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant. This position must work well in group setting/peers and with the public, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general direction from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager, and functional and technical supervision from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Chief Operator or other operators as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Makes scheduled wastewater treatment plant rounds observing plant operations, performing a variety of duties pertaining to wastewater treatment and noting plant maintenance needs.

Operate equipment and vehicles to repair and maintain the plant grounds.

Monitors plant functions by reading gauges, graphs, meters, control panels and SCADA system.

Collects samples and performs routine laboratory tests, document results and take appropriate actions.

Assists in a variety of maintenance and repairs of plant equipment and facilities including lubricating, painting, rebuilding and replacing treatment system parts and components. Clean and maintain tanks, screens, filters, pipes and pumps. Assists in inspecting and adjusting field pumping stations.

Identifies and informs supervisor and co-workers of present and potential problems and hazards.

Trains in the techniques and practices of wastewater treatment in order to become certified.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic principles of high school biology and chemistry as applied to wastewater treatment.

Ability to:

Conduct basic laboratory tests, maintain records and compile data into written reports, recognize and react to treatment process changes and demands.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow workers and supervisors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Operator D - Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent and six months experience or six months related education preferred. Possession of a Colorado Class D Wastewater Treatment Certificate or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.

Operator C - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in chemistry, biology or other fields related to the natural sciences and wastewater treatment. Possession of a Class C Wastewater Treatment Certificate, two years' experience in wastewater plant operation.

Operator B - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in chemistry, biology or other fields related to the natural sciences and wastewater treatment. Experience working with mechanical and/or processing equipment is desirable. Possession of a Class B Wastewater Treatment Certificate, 3 years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, including 1 year experience in the operation and maintenance of a municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Operator A - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in chemistry, biology or other fields related to the natural sciences and wastewater treatment. Experience working with mechanical and/or processing equipment is desirable. Possession of a Class A Wastewater Treatment Certificate, 4 years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, including 1 year experience in the operation and maintenance of a large municipal wastewater treatment plant.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift 50 lbs. The operator may be exposed to fumes, pathogens, airborne particles and various chemicals, some of which may be toxic. The operator is exposed to various conditions including excessive noise and extreme heat or cold. Use of a respirator may be required for some tasks and the operator may have to work in confined spaces.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid driver's license with safe driving record.

Possession of a Wastewater Treatment certificate or ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.

Must be able to work weekends.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Ability to complete FEMA ICS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
