MAINTENANCE WORKER – PART TIME

SUMMARY

Perform manual and semi-skilled tasks related to the operation, maintenance and repair of City facilities. Operate and maintain vehicles and other mechanical equipment; complete related work as assigned in a timely manner.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works and under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Public Works or an assigned full time DPW employee.

RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties. (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Operate a variety of hand and power-driven tools in the performance of such tasks as installing and repairing water mains, service lines, hydrants and related equipment; repair and clean sewer lines, plant and maintain lawns and trim trees, patch and replace sidewalks and pavements, install and repair traffic signs and markings.
  • Collect and dispose of rubbish.
  • General janitorial maintenance and cleaning.
  • Operate trucks, tractors, mowers and other equipment such as snow plows, compressors, generators and others.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on City facilities.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on vehicles, mechanical equipment and power tools.
  • Load and move materials, furniture and equipment.
  • Perform related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, QUALIFICATIONS & KSAs (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities) FOR EMPLOYMENT

All of the following functions, qualifications, KSAs and duties are essential. An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following:

  • Knowledge of the safety practices, tools, procedures and materials utilized in common public works maintenance and repair operations and skill in applying them in completing regular and emergency assignments
  • Knowledge of traffic regulations and equipment operation and skill in the safe and efficient operation of assigned City equipment
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical repair tools and procedures and skill in applying them in making minor repairs to a variety of vehicles, mechanical equipment and power tools
  • Knowledge of the tools and procedures of basic carpentry, painting, plumbing and cement finishing and skill in applying them
  • Skill in making basic mathematical computations and in following oral and written instructions
  • Mechanical aptitude and physical coordination required to operate mechanical equipment
  • Ability to walk, crawl, climb and maneuver where physical mobility is required to complete duties
  • Strength and physical condition sufficient to perform hard labor involving the operation of air hammers, heavy lifting (50 lbs.), shoveling and working in excavations to complete duties
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and the general public
  • A high school diploma or a GED and one (1) year of related experience are required.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license is required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF WORK

Employees in this position are occasionally required to work long hours outside of the usual DPW hours of 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Some examples of these circumstances include snow storms, flooding, broken water mains, power outages and malfunctioning equipment. This list is not all-inclusive and will include any emergency that necessitates DPW response after hours.
