City of Gaithersburg is Hiring a Fire Protection Engineer Near Gaithersburg, MD

The City of Gaithersburg Department of Planning & Code Administration, Permits & Inspections Division, seeks a qualified Fire Protection Engineer to utilize professional and technical expertise to conduct reviews of complex fire and building plans to ensure code and regulatory compliance.
The ideal candidate will exercise sound judgement and decision-making to ensure all new construction, renovation, and improvements comply with City fire and life safety code provisions. You will meet and communicate regularly with members of our community, design professionals, and staff to assist with plan review and permit issuance as well as fire prevention practices.
Starting salary for this position is negotiable within the target hiring range ($89,000 to $101,600) and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. What you will do with us:
  • Perform technical reviews of building and development plans and specifications for compliance with Life Safety Code and adopted National Fire Protection Association systems/standards.
  • Check sprinkler plans and hydraulic calculations.
  • Ensure compliance with gaseous fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, smoke control and related requirements.
  • Conduct construction and highly technical fire and life safety-related field inspections.
  • Maintain records and files; prepare reports.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public regarding fire prevention practices.
  • Oversee/lead the work of other fire protection staff in the absence of the Fire Marshal.

What you will need to be considered:
  • Bachelor's Degree in fire protection engineering or directly related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in fire prevention, inspection, and plan review.
  • Professional Engineer's License in Fire Protection Engineering (preferred).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Excellent organizational, presentation, analytical, interpersonal, time management, and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to embrace new technologies and innovation.
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties.

This is a full-time salaried "exempt" position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week (not eligible for overtime compensation under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the City's personnel regulations). Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.
The successful candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation. The City has established an alcohol-free, drug-free, and smoke-free workplace which applies to any person employed by, conducting business with, or applying for a position with the City. Each employee, as a condition of their employment, may be required to participate in pre-employment and reasonable suspicion testing. Employees classified as safety sensitive are also subject to immediate post-accident and random testing.

Employees who certify they are not fully vaccinated and those who decline to certify their vaccination status may be required to undergo weekly mandatory COVID-19 testing.
