Chief of Police Position

Come help lead the Caney Police Department into the future! The City of Caney has well over 50 businesses and nearly 2,000 people, with a well-respected Police Department. We are looking for a collaborative, forward-thinking individual who can continue to build upon work completed under the prior Chief’s leadership. The next Chief of Police must work hard to develop trusting relationships in the community and Department and will be a strong leader who takes a data- driven approach to crime and develops strategies and solutions supported by 21st-century policing principles and practices.

General Job Scope

The Chief of Police is appointed by the mayor with the consent of the city council and serves at the pleasure of the governing body. To plan, direct, manage and oversee the activities and operations of the police department including crime prevention, records management, animal shelter, various code enforcement activities and to manage and direct the ems department. The police chief will also support city technical services, field operations, training, special programs and criminal investigations; to coordinate assigned activities with other city departments and outside agencies; and to provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the city administrator.

Qualifications: o Must satisfy all state requirements as set forth in K.S.A. 74-5605 “Qualifications of
Applicant (Police Officer) for Training Course Requirements” or certification by reciprocity. o Complete 40 hours of continuing education annually, required. o Seven years of law enforcement experience, required. o Four years progressively responsible supervisory experience, four of which must be in an administrative and management capacity o Valid Kansas driver’s license, and driving record must meet commercial liability insurance requirements. o Must reside within a 30-miles of city limits
