The Animal Services Division ensures the welfare of animals in our care, promoting responsible pet ownership, adoptions, and community involvement. The division works to reduce pet overpopulation, reunite lost pets, provide veterinary support, and investigate cruelty cases, all while safeguarding community health and safety.

The Veterinary Technician assists Staff Veterinarian and maintenance of the Citrus County Animal Services Shelter Medicine program including functions associated with surgeries and procedures performed in the clinic.

  • Performs daily health evaluation and scheduled treatments for shelter animals.
  • Assists Veterinarian with daily shelter veterinary rounds, assists in the care and treatment of animals in the foster program.
  • Coordinates the daily surgery and treatment schedule, performs all pre-surgical duties, and alerts veterinarian to any concerns.
  • Collects samples of ear cytology, fecal, DTMs, PCR, with a proficiency to read findings for those tests done in house.
  • Properly handles, stores and processes lab specimens (blood, urine, feces, tissue samples, etc.)
  • Order’s lab tests (fills out forms, calls lab for pick-up, etc.), and ensures results are provided timely to the clinic for the Veterinarian to evaluate.
  • Reviews medical disclosures for shelter animals with potential adopters, provides client education and recommendations for conditions requiring follow-up care.
  • Responds to post-adoption health inquiries, schedules post-adoption exams and treatment.
  • Calculates, administers, and records pre-anesthetic drugs. Completes controlled drug logs as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicates to staff, volunteers, and adopters with questions regarding veterinary care.
  • Induces and intubates all patients, as necessary.
  • Monitors anesthesia with a clear idea of abnormal conditions, as needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to glove in sterilely and assist doctor with surgery when appropriate.
  • Responds appropriately during an emergency, takes directions from a Veterinarian and direct others during the event.
  • Maintains competency during CPR procedures.
  • Communicates effectively to staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Performs venipunctures and places IV catheters (canine & feline).
  • Administers sub-cutaneous and IV fluids.
  • Performs humane euthanasia of animals when warranted.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Upholds and engages in the progressive mission of Citrus County Animal Services.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience working in a shelter, veterinary clinic, or similar environment, preferred.
  • Prior experience dealing with the public desirable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration, Skills

  • Valid Florida Driver License (or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida), or valid Florida Identification Card is acceptable only for positions not required to drive a county vehicle.
  • Requires ability to perform drug calculations and data entry.
  • Requires experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective, and humane manner including cats, large and possibly untrained dogs.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours (may include nights, weekends, and holidays).
  • Prior experience working in Pet Point preferred.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength and agility to handle or restrain large or potentially dangerous animals.
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
  • Must have strong working knowledge of computers and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of Products (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Requires walking and standing most of the time.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, twisting, reaching above shoulders, and occasionally climbing.
  • Tasks may require frequent simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, and typing.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, and depth perception.
  • The job may risk exposure to extreme noise.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities

  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.

Must successfully pass an employment reference check, criminal background check, physical examination check. Drug screens will be in accordance with the Drug Free Workplace Act and/or the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
