Description

Position Overview

Accepts 7-day/week, 24-hour/day responsibility for planning, developing, organizing, directing and evaluating services and activities of the Nursing Department. Works harmoniously with other departments and disciplines to meet facility goals while ensuring a holistic and rehabilitative approach in assisting each Resident to attain maximal independence.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assure Resident safety at all times.
  • Willing to address each Resident with his/her preferred name as well as learn and abide by Residents’ Rights, rules and regulations.
  • Commitment to work well with other staff avoiding petty conflicts that disrupt a productive work environment. Does not participate in facility gossip and rumors.
  • Establishes and implements objectives and standards for the Nursing Department in compliance with the current requirements of regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluates and monitors care of Residents according to established standards through Resident rounds, observation of care rendered, review of required documentation, and feedback obtained from Residents.
  • Provides adequate and competent staff through training and the personnel process to meet Resident needs daily on a shift-to shift basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all activities, persons, and records.
  • Develops schedules and assignments equitably.
  • Does not show favoritism in assigning days off or workload.
  • Considers special requests in light of Residents’ needs and geography of facility.
  • Schedule reflects consistent staffing pattern for optimal Resident care.
  • Staffing levels are established in consideration of Resident needs, staff abilities and physical layout of facility.
  • Maintains assignment within scope of established job performance standards and orientation. 
  • Ascertains that accurate communications regarding significant changes in the status of Residents are expediently routed to designated physicians and family members/legal guardian.
  • Maintains adequate supplies and equipment for effective delivery of nursing care within the confines of approved budget.
  • Fill in as the Executive Director in their absence and as needed.
  • Maintains effective communications interdepartmentally to ensure that Residents’ Rights are enforced and included in overall plan of care with input from all disciplines.
  • Will conduct in-service training as needed.
  • Ensures that nursing renders optimal quality care by maintaining a current comprehensive holistic care plan with clearly defined objectives.
  • Establishes and implements standards of Resident care, policies and procedures.
  • Determines the individual Resident needs can be accomplished at this facility.
  • Evaluates each prospective Resident prior to admission.
  • Determines feasibility of Resident needs in relation to available resources for care.
  • Requires necessary reports prior to accepting new Resident.
  • Ensures clinical competency of employees.
  • Promotes preservation of dignity, individuality and independence.
  • Accurately record daily documentation on electronic system.
  • Ascertains that Residents, employees and families have awareness of established rights.
  • Assures a reasonable effort is made to inform Resident and responsible party about physician visits and that they have an opportunity to interact with physician during the visit.
  • Ensures that appropriate restorative/rehabilitative aspects of care are included in interdisciplinary care plan.
  • Regular attendance, interaction with employees, and providing important and valuable service for the facility’s Residents is an integral requirement for this position to accomplish the work. In order to accomplish this, it is imperative for the person filling this position to be present and accessible to staff, Residents and Residents’ family members during normal business hours, and as needed for emergencies, unless a business-related matter requires the employee to be off the premises. It is anticipated that this position cannot be completed within 40 hours per week.
  • Resident preferences are followed when providing care and service (i.e. meal times, treatment times, type & time of bathing, sleep & wake times).
  • Maintain Resident privacy, values and right for decision making.
  • Legally and safely operate automotive equipment.
  • Adhere to and comply with any applicable facility insurance guidelines to enable coverage under the policy.
  • Immediately notify supervisor and Executive Director for any injury, illness, or if develop a condition, that might impact the aptitude to perform job functions.

Qualifications


  • Unencumbered, active RN licensure in the state of permanent residence (must be from a state within the Nurse Licensure Compact).
  • Advanced education and/or experience in nursing management/administration (one-year experience recommended).
  • Sincere desire to work with elders and others who have a limited capacity for self-care.
  • Mental and physical capacity to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Work with and provide care to individuals of a wide range of personality types and maturity levels.
  • Demonstrates creative initiative and mature judgment in making competent decisions.
  • Consistently maintain courteous, empathetic, and professional attitude.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Communicate and comprehend orally and in writing to effectively receive and share information as necessary to perform job duties.
  • Transportation accessible to enable flexibility of work schedule.
