ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Founded in 1965, the Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. (CPC) aims to promote the social and economic empowerment of Chinese American, immigrant, and low-income communities. Today, CPC is the nation's largest Asian American social services agency and offers more than 50 programs at over 35 sites throughout New York City, including early childhood education, school-age care, youth services, workforce development, community services, and senior services. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The mission of CPC Early Childhood Center is to foster a lifelong love of learning in each of our students. Our staff fosters positive learning experiences through love, respect, quality education and professionalism. Early Childhood Centers serves approximately 300 students from ages 1-5 in multiple locations throughout the city. The goal of the program is to support students in all learning areas including intellectual, academic, physical, social and emotional growth.

Located at 151 Broome Street, New York, NY 10002, Little Star of Broome Street Early Childhood Center's mission is to provide a quality education program in a safe and nurturing environment for all children, regardless of their family’s financial background. Little Star provides meaningful early education experiences for young learners through a developmentally appropriate curriculum that helps all children succeed. The center serves children ages 2-5, serves three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, snack), has four classrooms and an outside play space.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Little Star of Broome Street Early Childhood Center, the Bookkeeper is responsible for maintaining a complete set of records of all financial transactions of the Center. The Bookkeeper balances books for the preparation of reports to show income, expenses and other items relating to bookkeeping of the center’s activities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the center director, the Bookkeeper performs the following:

  • Check computation of bills.
  • Compute payroll of bills.
  • Issue all checks for approved bills and payroll.
  • Make entries and maintain double entry journals and ledgers, including cash receipts and disbursement ledgers, payroll journal, petty cash, general journal and general ledger.
  • Check deposits, fees collected and receipts issued.
  • Check petty cash payments.
  • Prepares statements and financial reports.
  • Assists director in preparation of monthly expenditure projection report.
  • Prepare Health Insurance and Welfare Plan reports where applicable.
  • Prepare food claim reports, if required.
  • Prepare monthly Union dues and Credit Union checkoff reports.
  • Collect fees, issues receipts and reconcile receipt totals with actual cash collected.
  • Prepare bank deposit slips and deposit receipts at least weekly.
  • Post and summarize fee cards. Report weekly to director on fees in arrears.
  • Prepare children’s attendance reports.
  • Maintain petty cash, as follows:
    • When authorization has been signed by the director or other authorized person issues petty cash to person designated.
    • Gets from recipient of petty cash, bills and necessary change.
    • Enter petty cash expenditures daily in Petty Cash Book.
    • Balance petty cash daily.
    • Enter receipt of petty cash funds.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma; graduated from a commercial high school or business school including one year of high school bookkeeping courses; OR six credits of college accounting and typing ability of at least 40 words per minute.
  • One year experience as full-charge bookkeeper or assistant bookkeeper with responsibility for the general ledger, cash receipts book, cash disbursements book, payroll and payroll taxes, plus bank reconciliation statements.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct self in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively while remaining organized and completing tasks by assigned deadlines.
  • Computer literacy (Excel; Microsoft Office/Teams; Zoom and other meeting or communication platforms.)

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW

  • $ 15.72 to $17.55 per hour (equivalent annual salary $30,655 to $34,237)
