DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Job Description

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

PAYMENT SCHEDULE: Bi-weekly

TERM: Full-Time, Exempt

LOCATION: Charleston, SC. This role requires a hands-on leader in an office/campus hybrid environment most of the year and is not a fully remote role.

OVERVIEW:

The Development Department plans and implements a development and fundraising program to provide for the short- and long-term needs of the organization. The Development Director is passionate about relationships and multi-directional thinking. They are hard-working, flexible, detail-oriented, and creative, with demonstrated experience leading others. They will lead and manage other members of the Development team to ensure the success of all fundraising efforts. This role requires the ability to use professional relationship skills to cultivate, close, and maintain large-scale sponsorships, cultivate private donors and foundations that further Charleston Wine Food's mission and impact in the local community in a positive way.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Oversee Development Department, ensuring its growth, success, and sustainability
  • Sets annual monetary goals and budgets according to short- and long-term goals.
  • Establish fundraising objectives for the organization, setting one year, five year, and longer-term goals.
  • Maintain a list of potential financial donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals.
  • Produce relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to previous donors and the public.
  • Research potential sources of, and apply for, grants and public funding.
  • Oversees the fundraising process and maintains records of receipts and disbursements of funds.
  • Function as an accountability leader with regards to company and community expectations
  • Participate as a key member in client, sponsor, vendor, and internal meetings; manage expectations and timelines through planning sessions while encouraging creativity in brainstorming sessions.
  • Manage the full cycle of donor accounts beginning with recruitment and acquisition through continued partnership and repeat business
  • Work with team members each year to understand, prepare, and allocate Development budgets, leading and directing the team to success
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and on-board all Development Support team members
  • Lead the workflow of all Development Support team members
  • Manage, support, coach, and mentor department members to ensure success, happiness, and growth
  • Work closely with all departments, and department heads, to establish and maintain clear lines of communication
  • Research and stay abreast of industry standards and best practice to ensure Charleston Wine Food's position within the industry
  • Assist with any additional support as needed and requested

  • Source and manage sponsors and vendors for events and occasions

REQUIREMENTS

  • Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles.
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of tax planning principles and techniques that favor charitable giving.
  • Must be organized with diligent attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and work proactively
  • Professional writing and communication skills with impeccable grammar
  • Competent in MS Office, G Suite (Google Docs and Google Sheets), CRM, interoffice communication channels such as slack and asana.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of people
  • Comfortable working in an outdoor setting (rain, cold, mud)
  • Ability to do some physical work (lifting boxes, field set-up)
  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, or similar field required.
  • Eight years of experience in fundraising for a nonprofit organization is highly required.
