Position Summary

This position works under general supervision and is responsible for performing commercial/industrial plumbing work consisting of installations, alterations, additions and/or repairs of plumbing systems and associated materials and equipment within the plumbing construction industries utilizing the knowledge and skills developed through the attainment of a Journeyman plumbing license. This is a safety-sensitive position.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Studies specifications, building plans and shop drawings to determine tools and equipment required and the appropriate sequence of installation. Follows hanger spacing and load requirements based on specs and owner requirements.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, bathtubs, urinals, water heaters, water softeners and others.
  • Locates and marks the position of pipe, pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors using ruler, level and laser.
  • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and fittings, using hand and power tools.
  • Installs sleeves and leave outs for roof and wall penetrations.
  • Digs, backfills and tamps ditches using shovels, picks, and tampers.
  • Cuts, reams, and solders copper tubing/piping, braze, solvent weld, fuse groove and thread pipe using pipe cutters, reamers, torches, allow gaskets, solvent cement, fusing machines, press fittings, grove and pipe-threading machines.
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipes and fittings composed of metals, i.e. iron, steel, copper, brass, lead and non-metals, i.e. glass, vitrified clay and plastic using hand tools and power tools.
  • Joins pipe using mechanical solder, brazing and pipe joining methods.
  • Fills pipe systems with water or air and reads gauges to determine system leaks.
  • Maintains the work area in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations
  • Maintains required personal tools, and properly uses all Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
  • Analyzes blue prints, schematics and drawings of plumbing systems to ensure proper and efficient installation
  • Assemble, install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems
  • Install underground storm, sanitary, and water piping systems and extend piping to these systems
  • Install natural gas systems, and med gas systems
  • Install drain, waste, and vent systems, domestic water piping, and acid waste during new construction or remodels
  • Prepare work area and ensure tools, material, and equipment needed are present for work to be completed
  • Perform duties and operate equipment as permissible by license status and proper training
  • Inspects plumbing systems and equipment to ensure compliance with codes and specifications to identify hazards, defects and necessary adjustments/repairs to ensure a safe work environment
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose cause of plumbing problems and correct equipment and/or repair system as needed
  • Work with assigned foreman, coworkers and other job site workers to complete plumbing work properly and efficiently
  • Monitor plumbing work of Apprentice Plumbers to ensure plumbing work is completed properly and satisfactorily based on job specifications and code requirements
  • Train and guide Apprentice Plumbers to install, maintain and/or repair plumbing systems
  • Advise foreman and/or site management of hazardous conditions
  • Prepare written materials to document activities and log information as required by the job site or Company procedures
  • Provide assistance during emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns
  • Request equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability of materials to complete necessary electrical work
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective completion of project
  • Assist foreman as needed to provide preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services
  • Transport tools, equipment and supplies to job site as needed

Education and Experience

  • Current Journeyman Plumber License (must be licensed in TX or reciprocal state as defined by TX licensing agency)
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years’ prior experience performing plumbing work in a commercial or industrial construction environment

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrate basic understanding of English (ability to read, speak and write) while performing work-related tasks
  • Practice and comprehend safe work procedures per Company policy
  • Verify dimensions, alignments and clearances per drawings or plans
  • Analyze and interpret data and use good judgment to solve problems and resolve issues
  • Understand and adhere to safe work procedures per Company policy and OSHA guidelines
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Possess strong working knowledge of plumbing codes and different jurisdictions
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records
  • Meet deadlines and schedules with minimal errors

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Job requires working in all elements, depending on job location, time of year, heat, cold, rain. Wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses always), respirator when required. Able to work 8 -10 hours per day, 40 hours per week, and overtime as required and night shifts. Includes crawling, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, sitting, reaching, constantly moving about on the feet and able to routinely lift heavy objects more than 50 pounds and pushing and pulling of objects is required. Repetitive use of arms, hands and fingers. Must be able to complete a full day of assignments involving overhead work. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job. Possess good vision, normal or corrected and positively identify different colors of wiring. Works in single and multi-story buildings with all exposures typical of a heavy construction site, including portable sanitary facilities.
