For over 117 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness. The Flatbush Addiction Treatment Center provides assistance to individuals and families dealing with substance use disorders (alcohol, drug abuse and dependence). Services provided include individual and group therapy around relapse prevention, anger management, health education, art therapy, alcohol and drug education, driving-while-intoxicated, dual-diagnosis groups, employment services and parenting skills. 12-step groups are also available on-site. STATEMENT OF THE JOB Under the direction of the Clinical Director, the Art Therapist will work with patients in the alcoholism program to improve functioning in the areas of vocational, educational, daily living skills, and community competency. The agency has embraced the concept of a fully integrated system of care for all consumers of service. This requires that the staff assess the client's needs holistically and see it as their responsibility to connect the client with services needed--internal or external to the agency, regardless of the door to which the consumer enters the system. * To develop classes based on need and interest of patients in the alcoholism program, by preparing a course outline in a designated format. * To provide instruction to patients on a scheduled basis in a structured classroom/activity room setting exemplifying range of skills, including but not limited to basic literacy, GED, sewing, crafts, visual arts, dramatic arts, photography, cooking, money management, job seeking skills, typing, etc. * To document classes and evaluate/provide feedback to patients. * Provides service for social events. * Provides treatment planning or staff coverage. * Collection of urine toxicology screenings. * Participate as needed to Agency’s response to serious incidents and critical debriefing. * Perform additional duties as assigned on a part-time basis, including case management for a caseload up to 15 clients. QUALIFICATIONS * Master’s Degree from a nationally accredited institution required. * NYS licensure as a required. * Knowledge of Addiction, Alcoholism, and/or 12-step recovery. * Time management, organizational, and computer skills. * Ability to evaluate and intervene in crisis situations. * Excellent oral and written communication skills. * Comfortable with public speaking, lobbying and advocacy. * Flexibility & Creativity. * Bilingual Spanish/English; Russian/English; Creole/English; Chinese/English; Korean/English speaking preferred. * Ability to work flexible hours as needed (early morning appointments, evenings, and Saturdays). * Ability to climb stairs. * Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. * Regularly required to use their hands & fingers. * Frequenting walking, sitting, talking, or hearing. * Occasional standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. * Ability to read printed materials and computer screen * Able to travel to multiple locations within the five boroughs as needed.
