And we are proud of that, because it helps our customers build and power the world we live in – the roads, hospitals, homes and infrastructure. Without a dedicated workforce Caterpillar could not effectively meet our customer’s needs. Join us. Description To perform conventional, less complex engineering assignments in the electrical, electronics, or software field where building a working knowledge of Caterpillar and the products, technologies, processes, services, and systems related to specific job assignments is expected. Job Duties For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or “insights,” to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. Key electronic component technologies provide the foundational technology building blocks that enable valuable data to be gathered from machines and engines. The integrated mechanical and electronic control systems, associated control algorithms and on-board information systems generate, store, and transmit this critical machine information that is highly useful for product development and product improvement. The key role of this second level engineering position is to move from learning and assisting others to learning to contribute independently. Electronic Engineers are expected to be familiar with the company’s processes and methodologies in the electrical, electronics, and software space. Work is typically directed by a senior engineer who might review both methods and results. Decisions on routine, limited risk issues that may affect the project team, suppliers, or internal customers may be made by this position. Challenges include meeting expectations in delivering results, learning to consider alternative courses of actions, making timely decisions and developing communication skills. The Electronic Engineer position may work in any number of functional areas developing controls requiring an engineering degree, including, but not limited to, product design, development, research, quality, reliability, application and installation, product performance/support and service. Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new products, processes, or systems; communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units; contribute to the design of new products and processes; perform product and process maintenance; support other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers, and suppliers. Individuals in this position might expect to have several assignments allowing them to gain experience in multiple engineering functions. They will be expected to apply theory and concept in the assigned area. Electronic engineers must build an understanding of how and why decisions are made within their work group and organization. They may be responsible for applying those decisions to technology, theory, design, or development of a component or test, maintenance of a product or process, analysis of data or test results, application of a system, etc. Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of emerging technologies. Key learning comes from gaining experience in product, process, and systems definition, selecting the most appropriate tools and techniques for a project and collaborating with people who work outside of engineering as well as technical communication and documentation. Good communication is expected for technical status updates and when working closely with other system developers, support teams and testing staff in multiple geographic locations and organizations. Basic Qualifications Requires a Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum (Electrical, Computer) plus 1 to 2 years of relevant engineering experience, or an equivalent technical experience level of 4 to 6 years in an electrical or computer engineering field. Top Candidates will also have Excellent analytical skills. This is the second level of engineering assignment where incumbents have exhibited ability to begin working independently and have demonstrated ability to apply theory and concept, either through on-the-job experience or advanced degree. Requires strong technical skills. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the wok group, as well as customers and suppliers. Experience with electrification, batteries, power supplies, high voltage, electrical design, wiring schematics/routings, and alternative powertrains desired. Additional Information The location for this position is Rapid City, SD. Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position. This position may require up to 10% travel.
