Job Description

The Department of Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) is a unique department in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University which addresses important problems in technology and policy. We educate technically skilled students to be leaders in policy-focused research; we work on policy problems in which the technology matters. Carnegie Mellon University’s Engineering & Public Policy Department invites applications for a Research Scientist position to work with Professor Kate Whitefoot on modeling the battery electric vehicle (BEV) industry impact of critical materials production and innovation. The candidate will conduct novel research quantifying the effects of global disruptions to critical materials production on U.S. BEV production, manufacturing workers, and the ability of consumers to purchase BEVs. The research is part of a multi-university collaboration that will inform national policymakers and technology investments. Your core responsibilities will include: Initiating experimental research and performs technological investigation in software applications, systems engineering and related technology. May propose new research topics. May lead a research effort and oversee less experienced colleagues. May organize training activities targeted to researchers in designated project areas. Participating in the broader scientific community, including mentoring colleagues and representing the center and/or specific projects at conferences, consortia meetings and other events. Qualifications: Master’s degree required in engineering, science, or a related field (Ph.D. preferred). 5-8 years of relevant work experience. Experience programming and running code in MATLAB is required. Experience in one or more of the following preferred: Computational modeling or analysis of battery and/or automotive manufacturing Customer choice models (e.g. Discrete choice, logit models); or Quantitative economic equilibrium Or a combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated.
