Starting annual salary: $63,166 - $71,505, DOE

General Statement of Duties

The System Administrator monitors, deploys, implements, and maintains the County’s Infrastructure Systems. Monitors server performance, Storage Area Networks, Backups, and Virtualized Computing Environments. A System Administrator works closely with the IT Network Architect in designing and creating a proactive IT systems strategy. Responsible for maintaining security practices and ensuring the computing environment is up to date using patch management.

Classification Summary

The primary function is to administer the County's Infrastructure Systems. The work is performed under the general direction of the IT Operations Manager. Effective written and verbal communications is crucial as well as following County Policy and Procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, Tests, and Deploys new Infrastructure Systems;
  • Performs Installations, Updates, and routine maintenance of Infrastructure Systems;
  • Monitors server performance and optimizing systems;
  • Protects County Data following Policy and Procedure direction;
  • Monitor Storage Area Networks, Backups, and VMWare Virtual Server Environments;
  • Maintain and Provide System Documentation;
  • Recommend implementation and/or installation of New System Hardware, Firmware, Releases, or Upgrades;
  • Patch Management to ensure systems are up to date with security patches, updates, and propose schedules;
  • Identifies need and training to other team members to ensure required coverage for mission critical Infrastructure Systems;
  • Windows Active Directory Administration; Group Policy;
  • VPN Remote Administration and Security Practices;
  • Exchange Server Administration and Knowledge;
  • Network Topology Concepts and Server Planning within Development, Test, and Production Environments;
  • Security Practices and Permissions around securing data is paramount;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Extensive knowledge of all Microsoft Windows Server Platforms;
  • Advanced knowledge of common Enterprise IT Technologies;
  • Microsoft Windows Server Platform Administration, PowerShell, and Security Practices;
  • Microsoft Exchange Design and PowerShell Administration.
  • Experience with Backup Solutions and Concepts; IBM Storage Manager experience a plus;
  • Understanding of Interoperability of Networks and Server Systems;
  • Thorough DNS understanding, VLANs, IP Schemes, and Change Management;
  • Strong Active Directory Knowledge and Group Policy Knowledge;
  • Knowledge of different VPN technologies in an Enterprise Environment;
  • Strong knowledge of Server Hardware, RAID Configurations, and Storage Network Concepts;
  • Strong knowledge of Virtual Environments; VMWare is a plus;
  • Common administration of SQL Server, IIS, SCCM/MECM, and Enterprise Anti-Virus products a plus.
  • IIS Administration; Application Pools Experience a plus;
  • Linux knowledge is a plus used in a Web Environment;

 Ability to:

  • Work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality and quantity;
  • Be highly self-motivated;
  • Analyze and evaluate existing business processes and needs;
  • Effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced, high-pressure IT Operations Center;
  • Occasionally work outside of County business hours to maintain, install security patches, and perform routine server maintenance;

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • High school graduate or GED certificate required; Bachelor of Science Computer Science a plus;
  • MCSE or equivalent formal training;
  • Minimum of Two (2) to Four (4) years Infrastructure Systems Administration experience;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Special Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License;
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and by telephone;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, comprehend and prepare written technical reports and diagrams.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate and make adjustments to computers, tools and equipment;
  • Sufficient body mobility, flexibility, agility and strength to work in an office environment, perform duties that may require bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and to occasionally move or lift up to 50 pounds.
