Overview

The primary responsibility of the Director of Strategy role is leading initiatives that drive company growth and profitability. The majority of these initiatives align with our strategic goals (i.e., Burlington 2.0). This is a highly visible position with significant interaction with senior company executives.

You will frequently lead cross-functional teams, often challenging the status-quo that extend beyond routine operations. You will support critical business decisions after assessing customer needs, market/external opportunities, as well as our internal capabilities, to come up with practical solutions that improve Burlington’s off-price execution.

This job requires exceptional problem-solving skills, strong analytical capabilities, and great communication skills. A collaborative mindset and the ability to develop trusted partnerships across the organization is essential to driving change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work in conjunction with the Senior Vice President, Vice President and other key senior executives to drive key analysis supporting strategy development at the corporate and business unit level, designing, developing, and executing whitespace growth opportunities consistent with the Company’s goals.
  • Communicate strategy to key internal and external partners.
  • Partner with business leaders and the ELT to drive major growth, and value creation initiatives, managing and facilitating cross-functional programs. Drive meaningful decisions and impactful business outcomes and help identify and clear roadblocks to progress.
  • Manage and monitor progress of the broad-based growth strategy agenda to ensure we are delivering the benefits from the transformation initiatives underway.
  • Ensure all functional areas are communicating and are aligned on short, mid, and long-term goals.
  • Drive competitive and consumer insights to influence the overall corporate strategy.
  • Encourage and analyze consumer research to provide insight on customer strategy opportunities for the company and for individual businesses.
  • Provide ad hoc business and competitive intelligence, and insights for key senior executives, e.g., new store performance, competitive information, and mergers & acquisitions impacts.

  • Business Leadership - Influences enterprise level strategies. Understands all aspects of the business, industry and competitive landscape. Distinguishes what is critical from what is important. Provides clear and compelling direction and ensures understanding. Helps streamline processes to manage costs and achieve efficiencies. Acts with a sense of urgency and builds and adjusts the plan to deliver results that meet or exceed expectations.
  • Team Leadership – Develops talent directly on the strategy team. Reporting into this role are Managers and Analysts, in team configurations similar to strategy consulting case teams. Brings out the best in people through coaching, feedback, support and encouragement. Optimizes organizational capabilities and removes barriers through relationship building. Is inclusive, seeks out varying perspectives and multiple alternatives, shares information and finds common ground. Understands and maximizes business interdependencies. Flexible in revising plans to support changing business needs.
  • Self-Leadership - Anticipates future opportunities and challenges. Outstanding communication skills - formal and informal. Develops and implements ideas that have long-term impact on the organization. Anticipates upcoming business needs and makes appropriate plans in advance to be prepared. Deals effectively with ambiguity and change. Displays leadership versatility, knowing when to step in and when to step out. Challenges tradition and conventional thinking when appropriate. Acts with integrity and courage and focuses on greater good over personal benefit.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Top tier MBA or advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) preferred
  • 6 years in management consulting or comparable corporate strategy experience preferred
  • Strong overall problem-solving capabilities including proven creative, conceptual, and analytic skillsets
  • Ability to frame new, ambiguous, and complex issues and articulate the implications by conducting rigorous and objective financial analysis
  • Good listening skills: ability to capture perspectives of diverse stakeholders and find common ground to drive actions
  • Ability to collaborate with senior level executives (EVP, SVP etc.)
  • Team player with the ability to sell change effectively and influence others across reporting relationships
  • Experience working closely with line groups to ensure that results and recommendations are brought to life in the business
  • Strong sense of accountability; passion for owning projects and driving them to completion; ability to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Keen understanding and passion for Retail; off-price experience is preferred
  • Pro-active leadership style with a desire to develop, grow, and mentor a high performing team
  • A proven track record of conducting research, analyzing/synthesizing results, and integrating specific, actionable insights into successful business driving programs
  • Superior verbal and written communications skills; excellent presentation skills and experience presenting to high-level audiences
