DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Senior Architects perform architectural work involving a full range of professional activity in the planning, design or technical review of drawings, and related details for the creation, construction, rehabilitation or restoration of buildings, projects or facilities. Incumbents perform full range of professional activities requiring a high degree of technical judgment, imagination and resourcefulness in the planning, design and construction of large projects in terms of functional requirements, structure, mechanical elements and costs. Work is not as complex as an Associate Architect and completed tasks are subject to close review for architectural design features, technical accuracy and conformance to objectives. There are many guides and standards specifications followed in the architectural field and an incumbent must exercise judgment regarding the applicability of such guides to particular circumstances at hand. Senior Architects are supervised by higher-level architects, usually an Associate Architect. Incumbents supervise the work of one or more technical aides, assistants and clerical personnel as assigned.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Prepares working drawings and/or full size details from preliminary sketches into plans, elevations, sections and details showing design, locations and dimensions of elements of the structure by hand or by using Microsoft office, AutoCad, BIM or a similar program;
-develops schematic drawings prior to the preparation of the work drawings showing necessary changes;
-prepares cost estimates for work;
Prepares contract documents (working drawings and specifications) in order to publicly advertise and bid out various construction projects;
-prepares specifications for material and equipment;
Reviews architectural designs for such factors as conformity with contract requirements, codes and standards, costs, accuracy and for agreement between the architectural and engineering elements;
-approves designs;
Provides original schematic and preliminary drawings of city-owned buildings according to an outlined program and local building codes;
Performs investigations for remodeling and rehabilitation work on existing structures;
Makes periodic inspections as required to insure full compliance with drawings and specifications;
-provides advice and guidance in connection with proposed changes;
Performs related work as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of architectural design as applied to drawings including plans, elevations, sections and details;
Good knowledge of the methods and materials used in building construction;
Working knowledge of codes, laws, rules and standards relating to the design and construction of buildings;
Ability to make and analyze comprehensive architectural design;
Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing;
Ability to use Microsoft Office and AutoCAD, BIM or similar programs in the preparation of drawings and sketches;
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with clients, technical experts and others;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Promotional:
(A) Continuous and permanent status in any city department as an Architect for one year;
OR
(B)Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Senior Drafting Technician for one year;
In addition, if qualifying under B, all applicants must meet one of the following:

(C) Associate’s Degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university and five years of full-time progressively responsible experience in architectural work involving the preparation of work drawings and specifications under the supervision of a licensed Architect.

(D) An equivalent combination of the foregoing within the limits of A, B and C.
NOTE: Possession of a Professional Architect’s License and current registration issued by the NYS Department of Education can be substituted for the above education requirement and must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.
