Bruker Nano, one of Bruker’s four operating segments, provides customers in academic and governmental institutions, life science, materials, and applied industries with the tools to determine the characteristics of matter and visualize the structure of molecules. Divisions within BNANO include Bruker AXS, Bruker Nano Analytics, Bruker Nano Surfaces and Metrology, Fluorescence Microscopy, and Canopy.

As Senior Director of Technology and Applications Development for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), you will work closely with internal experts, key opinion leaders in the AFM community, and AFM BU General Managers in the Bruker Nano Surfaces and Metrology (BNSM) Division to drive growth in the AFM business by identifying and developing disruptive technologies and accelerating the adoption of AFM in new applications.

In this role you are situated at the intersection of internal and external expertise. You play an important role in the development of the overall multi-year technology and applications strategy that supports the BU product roadmaps. In addition to your own scientific and applications work, you will lead a team of experts in the science technology, and application of AFM systems and probes. 

We are looking for someone with a hands-on management and leadership style along with in-depth knowledge of core technology and applications and the ability to think laterally and challenge assumptions are required to manage the team for peak performance. Additionally, we need someone who has a strong track record of external collaborations with leading scientists that have resulted in the successful development and commercialization of new technologies enabling new applications and growing the market for AFM.

As Senior Director of Technology and Applications Development, AFM, you will join a team of high-performance managers in the AFM business units during a critical phase in the growth of the organization. Therefore, you must have demonstrated the ability to set and meet high expectations for innovation, working closely with engineering, marketing, and key customers to productize technologies and drive their adoption. The environment is fast paced and dynamic and the Senior Director of Technology and Applications Development will have their team positioned for innovations that have impact in the market.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the technology roadmap for 3 AFM business units (AFMi, nanoIR and AAFM) to enable sustained market leadership and AFM market growth through innovation.
  • Identification and proof of concept work on novel technologies to support product roadmaps, development of nascent AFM applications, input for new product development, and alignment of internal expertise to target market segments and applications including working with opinion leaders in AFM.
  • As part of the AFM management team contribute to shaping the AFM business strategy during the annual strategy process. Lead as the executive in charge of technology and applications development and with a focus on business growth.
  • Implement and lead a portfolio of external collaborations that leverage key opinion leaders for both technology innovation and leading-edge adoption into new applications segments.
  • Provide highest level scientific application and technical expertise to serve as foundation for the definition, validation, and release of winning products and train the field applications team.
  • Deliver high-impact conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications advancing the state-of-the-art in AFM-based scientific research and showcasing Bruker’s leadership and active participation in the scientific community.
  • Provide inspirational leadership, motivation, creative problem solving, and hands-on direction to the technology and applications development staff.
  • Generate and oversee the conception and protection of intellectual property (patents and trade secrets) and evaluate existing IP landscape relative to products and roadmap.
  • Cultivate a milestone-driven culture of accountability, in which consistent innovation, quality and progress are expected.
  • Provide performance management for the team including managing objectives of individuals, and career development plans.
  • Work actively with human resources to recruit and attract top talent.

Qualifications

  • Recognized as having expert knowledge of the science, operation and applications of AFM and probe technology
  • Exceptional leadership, management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with employees and executives at all levels of the corporation and to establish and maintain strong relationships internally and externally.
  • Hands-on and active management experience in technology development for scientific instrumentation.
  • Active member in the scientific community, recognized as technology leader and innovator.
  • Experience in the use and development of surface metrology and characterization systems and associated applications in research.
  • Lead and negotiate win-win solutions to any technical, organizational or customer challenge.
  • Hold team and yourself accountable, demonstrate enthusiasm and can-do attitude, to develop excitement and the desire to work to a very high standard.
  • Think quickly on your feet, is practical and “street smart” – and wants to win.
  • Up to 25% domestic and international travel may be required.

Educational and Experience Requirements

  • A Ph.D. degree in one or more core engineering disciplines or in applied sciences such as physics, optics, material science or physical chemistry. A MS with additional or direct experience can substitute for a higher degree.
  • Experience of 10 years in management of technology development in scientific instrumentation.
