If you're experienced, hard-working, driven, and have a strong desire to share stories, we want to hear from you! Position Overview KIRO Radio news reporters are expected to be well-sourced, well-informed deliverers of original content and breaking news reporting, both on the radio and online, that is focused on the Puget Sound-area audience we serve. Our reporters are self-starters who are motivated to enterprise stories, maintain sources, and strive to set the agenda for news in the region. Reporters have the ability to take a story and deliver it in short-form news copy, long-form features or discussions on talk shows which span the political spectrum, and in long-form AP-style web copy for MyNorthwest.com. Reporters also take photos and videos at events to feed social media platforms and MyNorthwest.com Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion. This position is an onsite role that requires the employee to regularly work at our Seattle site. What You Will Do: Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to: Enterprise news stories Cultivate and maintain connections and sources Develop topical areas of expertise Concise, conversational and accurate on-air presentation in newscasts and on shows Create objective news content that will be consumed by a broad and diverse audience on the radio and online Write quickly, clearly and accurately for both newscasts, news/talk shows, and web Seamlessly records and edits audio Effectively use social media to present stories Contribute stories to MyNorthwest.com in a timely manner Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays under deadlines Available for breaking news coverage at all times of the day, including weekends and holidays Effectively communicates story assignments and progress with manager(s), newsroom peers, and news/talk show producers/hosts May at times be asked to serve as a fill in anchor and/or desk editor. Skills and Experience We Are Looking For: Proven experience writing for broadcast Proven experience crafting and effectively delivering stories on-air Naturally curious; aggressive in pursuit of information Has a deep understanding of journalistic standards, ethics, and expectations Quality on-air vocal presentation Writes factual and compelling news copy Computer-literate with the technical ability to operate studio equipment Understands social media platforms and has the ability to contribute to various platforms Is a self-starter who works well independently and in teams Proven news judgment and expertise in local news Ability to find, develop and deliver compelling news stories daily Outstanding writing, editing, and production skills Concise, compelling, and conversational broadcast writing skills and the ability to verbally deliver on-air newscasts Proven ability to multi-task and communicate clearly and calmly in stressful situations Experience delivering newscasts and reporting on-air An in-house writing and broadcast audition under the direction of KIRO Radio will be required Able to take direction/feedback and incorporate into work Exhibits a thorough working knowledge and understanding of the Bonneville International Corporation’s “Investigative Reporting Guidelines” as well as Company Policy and FCC Rules and Regulations. Maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with staff, management, clients, and audience. Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor. Preferred Qualifications: Four (4) year degree in journalism, communications, or commensurate work experience Two (2) plus years commercial broadcast journalism/reporting experience or equivalent Understands regional issues Strong understanding of politics and legislative proceedings Adept at writing and producing 30-40 second news stories, Ability to remain objective and expand stories into longer conversations with liberal, moderate, and conservative talk show hosts Video production and on-camera skills Master of both formal and conversational broadcast tone Physical Demands Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively. Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time. Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time. Compensation $24.05 - $43.27 an hour. The pay range provided here spans multiple levels of this job. Salary/Hourly rate to be determined by multiple factors including but not limited to evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with market data.
