Heights Philadelphia is Hiring a BLI Computer Science Fellow, BLI Computer Science Near Philadelphia, PA

The BLI Computer Science Fellow will play a critical role supporting Heights’ summer Blended Learning Initiative - Computer Science program for approximately 125 high school students at the University of Pennsylvania. The intern will work closely with the STEM Pathways Director, Coordinator, and Computer Science Instructors to identify and support weekly program and student needs. This will include a focus both in and outside of the classroom to help the program run smoothly and to optimize students’ learning experience, as well as their interest and preparation to continue with our AP Computer Science A classes during the 2024-25 school year.
You’ll be responsible for:

Conducting student outreach and check-ins to support summer retention and success..
Rotating between classrooms to offer supplemental instructional support and tutoring as needed, and to provide feedback and highlight best practices to help instructors develop and ensure that students have a great summer experience
Planning and implementing 2-3 Computer Science/Technology college and career panel events with the instructor team to build community and help students to see the BLI program staff as near-peer role models
Serving as a mentor to students, building rapport with them, and sharing your experience and enthusiasm for computer science and/or related fields.
Introducing students to the AP Computer Science course, reviewing AP benefits, and encouraging students to continue with AP Computer Science A in our school-year program and/or at their school.

About you:

Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science or a related field
Prior experience working with adolescents, preferably as an instructor, TA, tutor, or mentor
Interest in advancing equitable access to Computer Science among students from local underinvested communities
Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills

Heights employees:

Must meet expectations to report in-person on a schedule determined by their direct manager and/or the Vice President of the team.
Must meet PA State background check requirements [PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Check] at hire and every five years thereafter.
Must be able to complete an I-9 employment verification form to work in the United States
Strong orientation to customer service, particularly with regard to students, partners and colleagues
Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office and related applications, as well as use of general office equipment (phones, computers, copiers, etc)
Fluency in the use of data and data systems. Maintains appropriate engagement with data entry, reporting and review.
Must adhere to COVID safety guidelines as established by Heights and/or its partners.
Office-based staff should be mindful of the organization’s strong recommendation that staff maintain up to date with COVID vaccination and boosters.
Site-based staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and must submit to any COVID testing or other health screenings as required by the Department of Human Services and/or the School District of Philadelphia.
Must be able to work in a busy, often complex work environment that is generally climate controlled.
Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted on an occasional basis.
Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
Access to reliable transportation required
