Job Summary

The Equipment Engineer II provides technical expertise, service, and support by maintaining equipment and instrumentation, both in-house designed and third party, at world class levels in a fast pace regulated environment. The main duties include investigating and resolving equipment issues, planning and executing preventative maintenance, assisting and training lab personnel on proper equipment utilization, and contributing ideas for equipment functional improvement and cost reductions. The individual will work in a dynamic team-oriented environment, keeping our day-to-day lab operations supported as the point person for troubleshooting and maintaining our instrument fleet, helping Biological Dynamics deliver its highly complex product pipeline in a reliable and sustainable manner.

Essential Job Duties

  • Investigates and resolves technical problems with equipment and instrumentation.
  • Uses optical, mechanical, electrical, and/or fluidics knowledge to perform equipment troubleshooting.
  • Learns and understands subsystem or component level failures in complex instruments.
  • Plans, coordinates, documents, and executes multiple parallel activities such as calibrations, qualification tests, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, supplier/vendor support, and project activities with minimal guidance from manager or lead.
  • Provides training materials and assists with training of operators on the use of new equipment and processes.
  • Works in a team environment to improve equipment reliability and uptime.
  • Selects appropriate components and vendors for component or subsystem replacements.
  • Communicates and documents instrument issues.
  • Contributes ideas for functional development, and supports efforts driven by others.
  • Manages work performed by external contractors for calibration, preventative maintenance, or warranty work, ensuring they are completed successfully and on-schedule.
  • Generates and updates instrumentation maintenance procedures and IOPQ protocols.
  • Makes suggestions for continuous improvement and cost savings.

Education/Experience/Skills

  • Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of related hands-on experience and a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/engineering discipline, or a Master’s degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, adapt to changes in priority, and redirect efforts as necessary.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data and summarize results.
  • Excellent math and analytical skills.
  • Excellent technical troubleshooting skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience with electrical and mechanical schematics.
  • Fundamental knowledge of optical/mechanical/electrical and/or fluidic systems.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Experience working on laboratory equipment preferred.
  • Work experience in Life Sciences / Pharmaceutical / Medical Devices industries would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrates strong technical ability and creativity at a fundamental level.
  • Will regularly collaborate with senior team members.
  • Works on moderately complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation.
  • Exercises limited judgment within generally confined practices in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Interprets data and draws conclusions regarding results used in presented material.
