The Certified Medical Assistant is a licensed assistant who provides medical services to incarcerated inmates under the direction of a Physician, Physician's Assistant or a Registered Nurse. Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations and Health Services Administrator and is accountable for use of delegated authority. Pursuant to ยง15.2-1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. Examples of Work
Responds to medical emergencies throughout the facility. This includes the ability to perform continuous CPR until properly relieved.
Takes vital signs, height, and weight.
Completes medical histories on new inmates.
Assists with PPDs and EKGs.
Draws blood.
Measures and records intake and output.
Assists with patient treatments such as dressing changes, decubitus ulcer, and tracheotomy care.
Administers prescribed or non- prescribed medications to patients and maintains related medical records at all HSO facilities
Verifies identity of patient receiving medication and records name of drug, dosage, and time of administration on specified forms or records.
Presents medication to patients and observes ingestion or other application., or administers medication, using specified procedures
Receives supply of ordered medications and log information on proper forms
Be certified as a Medication Technician
Assist in Pharmacy Audits
Adheres to safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills.
Ability to deal with and respond to stressful situations in a calm and collective fashion.
Requires regular and reliable attendance.
Follows security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications.
Adheres to Universal Precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.
Qualifications
Follow physician orders for inmates to receive tests and treatment as ordered.
Ensure that specimens are collected as ordered and conveyed properly.
Maintain aseptic technique.
Assist physician upon request.
Assist as part of a team, along with an RN, in the screening of apparent emergencies throughout the facility, to include screening inmates in cellblocks for necessity and priority of being seen by the physician.
Be proficient in CPR and recognizing the need to implement it. Receive re-certification training annually.
Maintain working knowledge of social and behavioral aspects of inmates in the correctional facility, particularly as they relate to compliance with security needs while in the cellblocks.
Assist in cleaning, sterilizing and securing of equipment.
Notify pharmacy of inmate transfers.
Initiate call tickets for scheduled treatments or physician appointments, including the following day, and ensure transmittal to proper authority (Captain's office, etc.)
Assist in ordering supplies.
Notify supervisor and complete a written incident report for any/all medical or security occurrences.
Participate in in-service education.
Comply with dress code and administrative policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Annually, submit documentation of current certification.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
State certification and licensure, plus a minimum of one (1) year experience in emergency or correctional service. Must receive a satisfactory background investigation report. Must have graduated from an approved Allied Health School or received equivalent school training

Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs, run, bend, twist, reach, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs.; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies. Requires operation of standard office equipment.
