Description

Job Summary: The Model Maker creates industry-leading products through the development of solid visual models and rapid prototypes for our clients in the consumer, scientific, industrial, and medical fields. This role utilizes a variety of equipment, including CNC milling centers, rapid 3D printing machines, painting and woodworking areas, and computer workstations. The Model Maker often collaborates in cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality deliverables that meet project timelines and budget. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Lead model making and prototyping efforts from initial client meetings though execution and follow-up.
  • Create ultra-high quality solid visual models, working prototypes, and concept models for Industrial Design, Marketing, and Engineering. 
  • Utilize creative problem solving to optimize the model-making process and resolve fabrication techniques and related challenges.
  • Devise, construct, modify, and assemble tools, dies, molds, jigs, fixtures, metal, or plastic parts/products as well as mechanical, electrical, and electronic components into models or prototypes by operating a variety of rapid prototyping and traditional model-making equipment as required. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Select the appropriate cutting tools, attachments, accessories, materials, and settings to be used on machines.
  • Drill, countersink, ream, and tap holes in parts and assemblies for bolts, screws, and other fasteners.
  • Examine and measure completed units and parts to identify any defects and to ensure units conform with predetermined specifications; adjust machine controls to resolve production errors.
  • Grind, file, and sand parts to finished dimensions; smooth metal surfaces or edges; operate grinding equipment.
  • Inspect machinery for any needed repairs; performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance within expertise.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of work area.
  • Comply with all established departmental, environmental safety, and industry policies and practices.

Requirements

Education and Skills:

Required:

  • Two (2) years of work experience in model making; or a combination of one (1) year of work experience and the completion of eight (8) related academic courses at the high school level or above.
  • Strong mechanical and design aptitude with working knowledge of engineering, manufacturing, and/or modeling with a variety of materials, including foams, wood, plastics, and metals. 
  • Ability to work on projects with dynamic (changeable) specifications.
  • Ability to interpret 2D drawings and sketches into mock-ups, visual models, and 3D CAD models. 
  • Proficient with a variety of cutting and shaping tools (stationary, powered, and hand tools) and innovative in their use.
  • Proficient with measuring and inspection equipment, e.g., dial and digital calipers, gauges, etc.
  • Proficient in traditional model finishing skills, including sanding, polishing, painting, color-matching, texturing, silk-screening, color mixing and assembly. 
  • Proficient with adhesives, epoxies, solvent bonding, etc.
  • Demonstrates the following characteristics:

  • Dynamic, problem-solving aptitude with an understanding of the practice and process of building, refining, and improving a product.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work both independently and within a team in a fast-paced environment. Able to constructively communicate (verbally and in writing) with designers, clients, and vendors.
  • High organized with a strong attention to detail.

Preferred:

  • Associate degree or apprenticeship in model making, mold making, CNC machining, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of work experience in model making.
  • Experience interfacing with a variety of CAD software; accessing design drawings and engineering databases and determining the prototyping process that will achieve the desired results. 
  • Rapid casting skills: mold making, off-parting, core printing, tear molds.
  • Proficient in CAM programming and high-speed CNC milling.
  • Experience in additive manufacturing (3D printing).
  • Fundamental understanding of electronics, with proficiency in wiring or soldering electrical and electronic connections and components.
  • Proficiency in metal welding.
  • Accuracy in projecting the timeline for completing a prototype.
  • Competency in office communication applications (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and bending required.
  • Must be able to frequently lift 35 pounds at a time and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
