POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will serve as a professional land surveyor, handling survey projects from field to finish. Participates in preliminary and final land surveys ensuring accuracy and achievement of all project requirements and the minimum standards to the State(s) under which the services are performed. Texas license required. This position may spend up to 60% time in the field. Receives day-to-day direction from Survey Manager(s).

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Directs, manages and participates in the field production of topographic and boundary surveys as well as other survey tasks.
  • Executes planning for projects, including development of the project scope, task organization, estimates of effort and other required resources, and schedule necessary to complete the project with little direction or review from the Survey Manager. Creates estimate of cost and budget for the project. May collaborate with project managers to provide surveying costs as part of an overall project for a client.
  • Stays abreast of new surveying trends, techniques and technology.
  • Maintains and operates GPS and conventional surveying instruments.
  • Writes and organizes field notes.
  • Reads construction plans to ensure accurate area to be surveyed.
  • Scoping, writing legal descriptions, and checking easements.
  • Conducts research, as needed.
  • Plat and other survey deliverable production, and execution of final sealed drawing.
  • Provides performance information on all project team members to the survey manager or project manager.
  • Works directly with clients and outside project participants on projects as directed. Ensures all issues are addressed efficiently to the client’s satisfaction.
  • Performs drafting assignments using computer aided drafting program (CAD) and/or oversees other technicians working on drafting for survey projects.
  • Operates company vehicles, and is responsible for company vehicle(s) and equipment on project site. Ensures all equipment has been accounted for and properly stored at conclusion of work day.
  • Performs quality control and quality assurance on projects.

Qualifications

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Extensive survey knowledge related to field process, equipment, and techniques
  • Ability and aptitude to interpret and understand plans and specifications
  • Experience with TXDOT surveys and specifications required
  • Highly motivated with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lead, manage, train, and mentor others
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills in order to interact with clients, business partners, staff and management from a variety of skill levels as well as different authority levels within the organization and outside the organization
  • General business understanding with the ability to recognize financial impacts to projects and make or recommend appropriate adjustments
  • Good organizational skills; ability to set priorities
  • Proficient in MS Office and technical software
  • Knowledge and/or experience in survey software/CAD software and Trimble Business Center
  • Effective problem-solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to embrace new technologies and processes
  • Exhibits ability to work independently, initiative, responsibility, and flexibility
  • Advanced math skills including trigonometry
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to pass safety and certification classes (including First Aid and CPR) and exhibit safety oriented mentality

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Two-year technical degree from accredited engineering/surveying curriculum preferred.

Experience:

8 years surveying experience required. Experience leading survey crews preferred. Technical software knowledge and construction engineering experience preferred. Working knowledge in MS Office and AutoCAD required. CPR/First Aid certified or ability to obtain certification required. Professional Land Surveyor license required. Must be able to obtain licensure in states in which the company does business.

Travel Expectations:

Overnight travel is required. Land Surveyor travels in company vehicle or personal vehicle to project site staying near project site as needed with expenses paid. Depending on base location of employee and/or project work, position travels up to 50% of the time. Valid driver’s license with good driving record required.

Other Information:

This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the Federal Railroad Administration. The selected candidate will be required to pass a DOT FRA drug test as a condition of employment in this position. 

The selected applicant will also be required to complete a back-ground check. An applicant with a confirmed positive test result in the past (or the equivalent) that has not successfully completed all rehabilitation program requirements and follow-up testing requirements is not eligible for this position.

Working Conditions:

  • Lifting: Occasional maximum lift of 80 lbs. from floor to waist; occasional maximum carry of 40 lbs, 200 feet; frequent maximum carry of 20 lbs. up to 1 mile; occasional maximum vertical push force of 100 lbs.
  • Work is primarily outside and will have exposure to extreme weather conditions and nature elements. Will need appropriate clothing for extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, crawl and balance for extended periods of time.
  • Position will have extensive walking.
  • Must be able to navigate difficult terrain, including un-even surfaces, ditches, steep slopes, etc.
  • Must be able to use hands for carrying items, operating devices and/or equipment, and operating ATV vehicle.
  • Must be able to lift/carry items (i.e. chainsaws, generators, sledgehammers, jackhammers, hand tools, etc.)

 *Post offer, pre-employment lifting test will be required.
