In the Perfusionist role at Banner Wyoming Medical Center, you will be responsible for the cardiopulmonary bypass support of adult patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery or patients requiring extracorporeal circulatory and/or respiratory support.

You will have the opportunity to be responsible for the selection, maintenance, and use of the perfusion hardware and software. This position coordinates and communicates with the OR team any needs or variances that arise during the operation. Additionally, the perfusionist is responsible for providing initiation for specialized patient populations requiring ECMO therapy.

Banner Wyoming Medical Center is located in the heart of Casper Wyoming. POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the cardiopulmonary bypass support of adult and pediatric patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery or patients requiring extracorporeal circulatory and/or respiratory support. Each perfusionist will be responsible for the selection, maintenance, and use of the perfusion hardware and software. The perfusionist coordinates and communicates with the OR team any needs or variances that arise during the operation. Additionally, the perfusionist is responsible for providing comprehensive management and coordination of care for specialized patient populations requiring ECMO therapy.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs required clinical tasks involving the circulatory and pulmonary support of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery or patients requiring extracorporeal vascular support during surgical intervention. This includes procedures that require cardiopulmonary bypass standby support and extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The transport of ECMO patients both within the hospital and between institutions may be required. The perfusionist will conduct cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO according to general departmental policies and procedures and according to the individual surgeon's preferences regarding specific techniques. Techniques and the use of safety equipment recognized by the perfusion community as standards of practice will be followed. The perfusionist will perform the required number of perfusion procedures necessary to maintain certification and competency. The perfusionist may be responsible for the intraoperative management of ancillary equipment such as the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) and blood salvage devices. Each perfusionist will abide by the call schedule created by the department supervisor.

  2. Responsible for the proper selection, maintenance, and use of the equipment necessary to perform cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO including hardware and disposables. The perfusionist will select equipment according to specific patient requirements for the procedure to be performed. Facilitates discussion with the health care team that includes medical record review, decisions needed for prime selection, drug and blood additives, and techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass. Responsible for cleaning and restocking all perfusion equipment and supplies following a procedure. The perfusion supply cart and/or area will be left fully stocked and ready for an emergent procedure.

  3. Coordinates and deploys Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation support (ECMO) for patients requiring circulatory and/or respiratory support. Responsible for the clinical needs of the patient on ECMO which may include bedside management of oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal, maintenance of normal acid-base balance, administration of medications, blood and blood products, and maintenance of appropriate anticoagulation therapies for the blood. This may include the transport of patients on ECMO within or between institutions.

  4. Responsible for the proper operation of various point-of-care blood analysis devices. Examples include but are not limited to blood gas analysis machines, devices that measure the activated clotting time (ACT), thromboelastography devices, heparin concentration machines or other blood analysis devices as necessary for cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. The perfusionist will abide by all policies and procedures pertaining to these devices as provided by the hospital's Point-of-Care Testing department including annual competency testing and documentation.

  5. Maintenance of a detailed Cardiopulmonary Bypass Record for each procedure by the perfusionist. The record will be part of the patient's official medical record. A pre-bypass checklist will be completed for each procedure. Billing and charge forms detailing the equipment used will be completed by the perfusionist for each procedure and forwarded to the appropriate department. Other documentation as required will be completed as well.

  6. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the perfusionist will be required to serve as a Clinical Instructor for students enrolled in the Perfusion Science School, University of Arizona at Banner institutions that support the perfusion school. Will provide clinical support for student's research projects when appropriate.

  7. Fosters an atmosphere of continuing education for self and peers. Attends continuing education opportunities and department meetings regularly. Participates in other projects assigned by the department supervisor.

  8. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.

  9. Works independently to provide excellent patient care. Internal customers include patients, staff, and physicians. External customers include patient family.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate from an accredited perfusion program.

Must be certified or board eligible thorough the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
