As the Accounting Manager, you will have an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get involved in all things accounting at Balto. This role provides an opportunity to grow as an accounting professional with a fast-growing software company. Balto is booming, and as our Accounting Manager, you will be a vital member of the team as you work closely with our CFO, Leadership Team, Finance Org, and Operations Department.

We’re looking for a self-starter that is motivated to seize responsibility, be decisive, and grow with the company. 

What kind of responsibilities might you take on?

• Mentor and oversee existing accounting staff; Build accounting processes to ensure consistency with US GAAP
• Oversee all key accounting functions including (but not limited to) revenue recognition, A/R, A/P, Payroll and the monthly GL close process
• Oversee the accurate preparation of all journal entries, including accruals, deferrals, expenses and reclassifications
• Perform all necessary account reconciliations; ensure accuracy of GL and financial reports
• Identify and remediate gaps in accounting compliance; Establish and monitor internal controls leveraging best practices to ensure reliability of financial statements 
• Optimize speed and accuracy of accounting activities via process improvement, systems/automation and detailed close calendar management
• Manage payroll and ensure compliance with all state, local and federal government tax requirements including registrations and filings
• Manage third party tax consultants and related services; oversee the preparation of corporate tax filings and ensure proper sales tax treatment on customer invoices
• Help drive overall audit readiness and manage internal and external audits by preparing the necessary data and reports; coordinate with external auditors as necessary
• Work with finance team to assist in the preparation of financial statements for reporting purposes (including balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement) as well as ad hoc data prep and analysis required for internal, board and investor reports
• Given the hyper-growth state of Balto, additional duties and ad-hoc projects will be required

Minimum Skills & Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and CPA Certification
• 8 years of relevant work experience 
• Experience across all key accounting functions 
• Strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills 
• Track record of working independently with strong ability to multitask 
• Ability to respond to internal requests for support and assistance from all levels of employees in a prompt and professional manner 
• Ability to work in a confidential manner due to access to information of a sensitive nature
• Ability to act as a brand ambassador for the company, both internally and externally, with the shareholders, employees and the government agencies, auditors and the general public
• Ability to ask questions with a desire for continuous learning and development
• Innate drive to constantly seek efficiencies via process improvement and automation

Preferred Skills & Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Accounting 
• Big Four Accounting experience
• In depth experience with revenue recognition under ASC 606
• Experience in a fast-growing technology company, ideally within the SaaS industry
• Experience with NetSuite and Salesforce
• Ability to work out of the St. Louis office (can be fully remote if not local to St. Louis)

Is Balto named after that Cartoon Dog?

Well, kind of - that cartoon dog was actually named after a real dog. Balto successfully guided his pack through a harrowing journey across Nome, Alaska, in 1925 to deliver medicine to the ice-locked town. We liked the metaphor: our technology guides people to be successful throughout their conversations, scouting ahead and providing helpful support. Like in 1925, a human is still in charge, but humans (and dogs) are always better off with a companion.
