Location: Montrose, CO

Description of Responsibilities: This position provides coding and technical supervision of the coding staff. This position resolves error reports associated with the coding and billing process, identifies, and reports error patterns, and assists in the design and implementation of electronic health records and/or other software applications to improve workflow and reduce coding and billing errors. Acts as the coding subject matter expert for coding staff, members of the management team and other Sections within the Revenue Cycle, as well as multiple areas outside the Revenue Cycle including specific physician practices and the Legal Department. Maintains expert knowledge of coding workflow and optimizes use of available technology. This position will also take on additional duties as assigned.

Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand or kneel and occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop. Must have ability to sit for longer periods of time at a computer. Employee must be able to travel between AHS locations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. • Required Education and Experience
  • Education: HS diploma or GED.
  • Minimum Certifications: Current AHIMA or AAPC credentials
  • Minimum Experience: Minimum of three (3) years previous outpatient coding experience.
  Preferred Education and Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related study (Business/healthcare
  • Minimum Certifications: At least 1 year of experience supervising Certified Medical Coders
  • Must be knowledgeable regarding patient health information and HIPAA compliance.
  • Must be organized and demonstrate the ability to follow guidelines.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to be self-directed.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to follow the organization’s confidentiality and security rules.
  Required Skills:
  • Determines, coordinates, and supervises daily staffing assignments.
  • Provides direction, orientation, training, coaching, and mentoring to staff. Performs or assists with performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Supports management initiatives. Assesses quality of services delivered and facilitates staff development programs.
  • Ensures staff compliance with departmental and organizational policies, procedures, and protocols. Performs staff responsibilities as needed to fulfill required service levels. Leads the handling and resolution of complex issues and complaints.
  • Serves as an internal liaison with other departments that have coding concerns/questions.
  • Extensive knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be organized and able to multitask.
  • Working knowledge and intermediate experience with Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Strong ability to speak effectively, present information and respond to questions from managers, clients or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Ability to take on additional duties when necessary.
  • Occasional Travel required.
  • Must have current driver’s license, qualify for commercial vehicle insurance and maintain a driving record that allows insurability with AHS’ insurance agency.
