AVMA is Hiring a News Reporter Near Schaumburg, IL

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 and representing over 99,500 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia and uniformed services, is seeking a News Reporter to join our Marketing and Communications team at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago.

Reporting to the Senior News Editor, the News Reporter is responsible for writing articles and other content on veterinary and animal-related news of interest to AVMA members, the veterinary profession, and other stakeholders for publication in AVMA’s print and electronic media. They will work collaboratively with staff, volunteer leadership and other stakeholders to write on a variety of topics including veterinary-related legislation, regulatory policies, animal diseases, public health issues, scientific research, veterinary practice management and other professional issues. 10% travel.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about AVMA’s mission. Additional qualifications include:

  • BS/BA degree in journalism or a related field with a minimum of two years’ of related post-college news reporting work experience, association experience a plus
  • Strong reporting, interviewing, and writing skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be highly collaborative
  • Able to function well autonomously and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate to both the scientific and non-scientific communities
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style
  • Proficiency in editing
  • Able to handle multiple tasks while adhering to deadlines
  • Must demonstrate AVMA’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in execution of duties
