This position will be responsible for the oversight of the estimating process for projects bid and awarded and will assist to establish standard procedures, methods, processes and software requirements for estimating and staff training. The estimator will collect and review past project performance data and establish historical estimating cost and standards for future budgeting and estimates. This person will also provide business development support for tracking and long–term planning, help plan all projects with expectations for the efficient use of personnel, equipment, materials and subcontractors within contract requirements, time guidelines and other restrictions.

Responsibilities:

  • Estimating medium to large projects for URD work
  • Fully responsible for the preparation of accurate and complete bid estimates. Manages bid invitation process by entering data into bid management system. Including set-up, sending bids, following up on responses and forwarding responses to director of operations
  • Manage vendor data base to assure up-to-date and accurate subcontract information.
  • Order drawings and maintain updated drawings
  • Responsible for gathering, logging and tracking information as it relates to the prequalification process
  • Inputs take-offs and prices into bidding software
  • Prepares cost analysis by comparing material, labor, equipment, subcontractor and overhead costs incurred in the installation of items compared to the bid. To be used in future bids
  • Follow awarded contracts to monitor extra work items, procurement of material and credits
  • Call vendors/contractors covered by project. Required professional demeanor, accurate record keeping and time management
  • Develop and maintain profitable relationships with subs and vendors
  • Budget planning and monitoring projects
  • Conducting/organizing/attending site visits
  • Ensure bid deadlines and customer presentation requirements are met
  • Complies with OSHA and company mandated safety and health regulations
  • Proactively identify and suggest solutions for known or anticipated construction problems to minimize cost and reduce risk
  • Analyze special safety and code requirements on all projects
  • Ensure standard procedures and time frames are defined and implemented
  • Identify risk issues, their order of magnitude and proposed solutions to minimize
  • Assist and/or review general conditions, schedule, scopes of work, hoisting plans, site logistics, means and methods, constructability and other information to insure competiveness and limit risk
  • Review constructability issues with key operational staff
  • Present and participate in bid strategy meetings
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with projects
  • Support the field workforce in the preparation of estimates for change orders and claims
  • Prepare reports and analysis pertinent to construction estimating as requested by management
  • Produce reasonable schedules to support a construction estimate
  • Other duties as assigned by Project Manager

Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently and with minimal structure while exercising great judgment along with and as well as the ability to prepare responsibilities matrix and assign staff for estimating efforts on each project
  • Knowledge of estimating techniques, cost control and general profit/loss terms
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills with great ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Able to travel to job locations to assist in confirming project site conditions
  • Ability to professionally communicate in highly stressed environments
  • High level of organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness
  • Must be able to interpret blueprints, construction documents, and related materials
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft suite and related estimating software
  • Must demonstrate proven people skills
  • The ability to learn quickly and multi-task
  • Self-motivated, positive attitude, and strong emotional intelligence
  • Ability to perform high-level mathematical calculations
  • 5 years of experience in a similar position- commercial estimating, engineering; underground utility construction; power estimating, project managing, and/or knowledge obtained while working in a related field
  • High School Diploma is required, bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with good driving record
