Prince William County Service Authority is Hiring an Utility Worker (I&I) Near Woodbridge, VA

Position Summary

Performs semi-skilled work in the construction, repair, restoration and maintenance of water and sanitary sewer systems. Utility workers may be assigned to water distribution or sewage collection, typically working as members of a crew engaged in support of Service Authority operations. Employees operate automotive and/or mechanical equipment relating to the completion of the above tasks. Locates, marks, and protects underground sanitary sewer and water lines, and their related structures and fixtures.

Position Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions

* Works as part of a crew to assist in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer lines to include mains and service lines.

* Assists in maintaining, inspecting, and reducing infiltration and inflow into the sanitary sewer collection system.

* Provides services for sewer and water main excavation, repair, and new installations; sewer manhole and water valve maintenance and repair and installation; sewer and water main easement maintenance; sewer and water main flushing and root removal, as well as other general water and sewer work.

* Assists in maintaining, inspecting and reducing leaks in the water distribution system.

* Rehabilitates manholes including inspection, grouting, parging, raising and lowering, resetting frames and covers and installing inflow inserts. Repairs and replaces cleanout caps. Assists homeowners, and contractors to locate and identify problems and structural failures anddefects. Responds to customer needs and requests and investigatesproblems.

* Performs manual field locating and marking of sanitary sewer mains, laterals, manholes, water mains, service lines, and other related structures as requested. Locates and marks the horizontal location of water and sewer facilities in accordance with existing construction codes.

* Meets contractors/construction personnel on site to verify or confirm utility locations, and to provide any other necessary information and answer questions pertaining to work.

* Performs varied technical work in gathering, combining and analyzing data pertaining toas-built records andplans.

* Performs field recovery work and prepares sketches of existing water and sewerfacilities depicting the dimensional location of valves, manholes and relatedfittings.

* Assists with the processing of VA811 Miss Utility tickets, including preparation ofpaperwork and gathering and recording information need to complete and process theticket.

* Sets up and performs safe traffic control of personnel and equipment while performing duties in streets and roadways.

* Participates in inspecting all new sanitary sewer systems to ensure construction complies with standards andspecifications.

* Repairs, replaces, and installs sanitary water and sewer connections, lines (mains and laterals) and related facilities including unstopping sanitary sewer lines (main and laterals).

* Performs miscellaneous maintenance duties. Operates jackhammers and saws to remove concrete and asphalt. Sets forms, pours concrete, and assists in finishing concrete sidewalks. Inspects, repairs, replaces, and paints fire hydrants, and miscellaneous structures and equipment. Patches and seals asphalt. May repave sections of roads using an asphalt roller.

* Assists in the daily maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all equipment used in the performanceof duties. Maintains shop area and shopequipment.

* Operates a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks i.e., dump trucks, pickup trucks, service trucks, flushing trucks, loaders/backhoes, excavators, trailers, and tampers; loads and unloads dirt, gravel, and other materials asrequired. Operates riding and push mowers, chainsaws and weed whackers to clear easements; cuts and trims grass, seeds and maintains sewer or water line rights-of-way asrequired.

* Acts as a yard attendant disbursing and resupplying fuel, supplies and materials asrequired.

* Repairs other structures such as buildings, vaults, and wet wells.

* Restores areas disturbed by digging.

* Monitors sewer flows during high infiltration periods.

* Uses GIS system and provide field-observed updates to Enterprise AssetManagement/GIS.

* Participates in on-call program.

* May be deemed essential at anytime.

* Performs other duties as assigned or required.

* Knowledge of operation, and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment; traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; basic construction and maintenance procedures; occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in equipment operation; basic math skills; English usage, spelling, andgrammar.

* Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, occasionally under unfavorableweather conditions; communicate effectively; operate a Service Authority vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; follow established policy and procedures in the performance of duties; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work cooperatively withothers.

* High school diploma orGED.

Special Requirements:

* Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Service Authority policy requirements.

* Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement or acquired within120 days of employment. Must pass air brakes knowledgetest.

* Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) flagger certification and basic Work ZoneTraffic Control Certification or obtain within 90 days ofemployment.

* Valid Medical Examiner's Card (DOT Physical) or obtain within 120 days ofemployment.

* Employees hired to work in the Inflow & Infiltration department must obtain and maintain NASSCO'S PACP certification within one year of employment.
