The August Schell Brewing Company is seeking an Accountant to join our team in New Ulm, MN. This position will be a key member of the Schell’s Finance department and contribute to the high-functioning business operations at the brewery.

August Schell Brewing Company is a family owned and operated brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota. We began in 1860 when August Schell, a German immigrant, couldn’t find a traditional German beer in his new home that was good enough. So, he made his own. 

While the brewery has seen some changes, like plumbing, August’s legacy of being an innovative brew master remains. It has continued through six generations and over 100 varieties of German Craft beer. Not only do we make good beer, but we run a pretty damn good business too, and that’s why we’re looking for an accountant….and, preferably one who gets excited about beer!

Responsibilities

• Efficient and timely month-end and annual close, including preparation of journal entries and general ledger review and analysis
• Functions as leader and resource for brewery operations including, but not limited to, accounts receivable, accounts payable, revenue recognition, and expense classification
• Provides business leaders with accurate, ad hoc financial reports to assist in business decision making process 
• Serves as company-wide resource for team members regarding accounting policies and practices
• Assists with annual budget preparation, including ancillary reports and variance analysis
• Change agent that drives standardization, refinement and maintenance of finance department policies, practices, and internal controls 
• Participates in initiatives which may be outside of finance responsibilities
• Assists with documentation and creation of brewery processes and procedures, with emphasis in eliminating redundancy and inefficiencies 
• Process bi-weekly payroll, maintaining payroll system setup and software
• Keeps up to date with current payroll laws, changes and compliance 
• Other duties as assigned

• Demonstrated understanding of accounting practices and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) 
• Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills, proficient in other Microsoft Suite applications
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to maintain sensitive employee and business information in a confidential manner
• Highly capable of multi-tasking and problem solving in a fast-paced environment
• Team player, thrives on collaboration, but is also independent in work duties
• Excellent work ethic and sense of accountability

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or other related field
• Minimum 3-5 years related work experience, preferably 1-2 years in public accounting 

Preferred Skills

• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications
• NetSuite ERP experience 
• Paylocity software experience
• 1-3 years of Payroll preparation experience
