Job Description

We are seeking a talented Data Engineer with DevOps experience to help lead the company’s growth. You should be a technical leader who takes extreme ownership – you love solving problems. Create and continuously improve guidelines and procedures including process efficiency. Provide application development for projects and infrastructure support activities.

Your Impact

Data Engineer and Cloud Architect (90%)

  • Develop code to Extract, Translate, and Load data from multiple government, civil, and commercial sources into a Data Lake to support scientific research
  • Containerize previously developed scientific models to enable cloud native technologies like dynamic load balancing and cluster computing
  • Maintain configuration control of company software in GitLab and develop CI/CD pipeline for rapid deployment of new services
  • Communicate findings in technical writing through reports and peer-reviewed journal publications
  • Modify and write software using modern software coding standards and tools.
  • Collaborate with teams of 3-6 people
  • Possible projects: Earth Observations Digital Twin, Analysis of Weather Observations with AI data fusion, and observing system simulation experiments

Business Development (10%)

  • Assist in Business Development activities such as proposal development, presenting at scientific conferences and workshops, and collaborating with scientific colleagues and industry partners outside of Orion

This Opportunity

OSS has recently been awarded a grant by NOAA to develop Earth Observations Digital Twin (EODT). This project will seamlessly automate multi-platform, multi-sensor space and terrestrial weather data processing, analysis, and visualization through artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and digital engineering. This digital platform will allow four-dimensional reconstruction of Earth’s atmosphere’s past and present and serve as the frontend infrastructure of operational numerical weather prediction models forecasting the future. We seek an experienced, enthusiastic, and dynamic Data Engineer or Data Scientist to join our team at our headquarters in Louisville, Colorado, to play a crucial role in this exciting and challenging EODT development. The ideal candidate enjoys diving into a sea of complex data to seek scientific insights and business values through AI data analytics and digital solutions. You also have plenty of opportunities to contribute to other OSS projects based on your scientific and technical interests.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM, advanced degree preferred
  • 4 years’ experience in data analysis and/or data science
  • Experience in software development, integration and testing
  • Experience in architecting / developing Linux systems that supports a variety of application footprints (Virtualized and Containerized)
  • Proficiency in Python programming and Jupyter Notebooks
  • Experience in pandas, xarray, plotly, scikit-learn, and TensorFlow
  • Self-motivated with strong work ethics and love to learn
  • Fast learner who can quickly pick up new technologies
  • Secret Security clearance or the ability to obtain one as needed

Preferred

  • Knowledge in large-scale weather, climate, and space data
  • Experience in pandas, xarray, plotly, scikit-learn, and TensorFlow
  • Experience in satellite data retrieval, processing, or data assimilation
  • Experience in machine learning, deep learning model development, and optimization in large-scale structure and unstructured data
  • Knowledge of commercial and government cyber security processes and procedure
  • SEC Certified
  • AWC Cloud Architect Certification, or similar
  • Current SCI security access and an investigation with in the last 3 years

Skills

  • Good practices in software development and collaboration
  • Software experience with a wide spread of languages (Python, C/C , Fortran, Java, JavaScript/HTML)
  • Excellent technical writing ability
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiar with data formats (e.g., netCDF, GRIB, PREPBUFR)
